Rovers Ladies pay for missed chances

BLACKBURN Rovers Ladies suffered their second successive Women’s Premier League Northern Division defeat as they went down 3-2 at Newcastle United.

The visitors took a one-goal lead into the break after an impressive first-half performance.

But the hosts fought back after the restart to claim the three points.

Rovers assistant manager Amanda Goodwin, who was forced to deputise between the posts, said: “We were absolutely brilliant in the first half and there were some good individual performances, especially Sophie Flynn playing in the holding role.

“We were comfortable in possession, we pressed well, we won the ball back, we created a lot of opportunities and we were the dominant side.

“But in the second half Newcastle took the game to us, we made two or three mistakes and they capitalised.

“We still had chances but we couldn’t put the game to bed and that’s our problem at the moment.”

The hosts went in front before Chloe Adams restored parity when she raced on to a fine through ball from Nichol Foster, slipped past the keeper and scored.

Foster then got in on the act herself as she burst clear to fire home.

At the stage a third Rovers goal would have killed the contest.

But they were unable to take any of the chances that came their way and Newcastle made them pay with a second-half double.

Meanwhile Rovers’ U21s Premier League match against Liverpool on Friday, to be played at the Anfield club’s Academy in Kirkby, has a new kick-off time of 7pm.

But first up for the Rovers young guns is a trip to Motspur Park in Surrey tonight to take on Fulham (7pm).
