2:39pm Tuesday 4th March 2014 in Sport
Punch put the poor form of the last few weeks behind them with a devastating return to form. The victims were high flying Hoddlesden who found themselves on the wrong end of a 7-1 scoreline.
Punch opener Jimmy Cummins disposed of Hoddlesden skipper Dave Fenwick to take the first before reigning singles champ Jamie Ridsdale knocked in a cracking break of 60 to take the second.
Punch found themselves 4-0 up before Hoddlesden managed a frame courtesy of Jake Loftus who had a nice run of 48 to beat Paul Wilkins.
That was all though as Ridsdale continued his good form with a 48 in the pairs and Ian Harle chipped in with 56.
The result puts a serious dent in Hoddlesden's championship aspirations, they are now 11 points behind league leaders Greenfield with 6 games to play, Greenfield entertained Stanhill in what turned out to be a gritty hard fought draw.
Highlights here a wonderful display from the ever improving Alan Heaton and a run of 53 from Chris Lawson. Reigning champs Fox & Hounds had a comfortable 5-3 victory over West View.
After sharing the first four frames Fox opened a 2 frame lead before Dave Stephens pulled one back for the visitors.
Fox took the final two frames courtesy of skipper Derek Howarth and Scott Morris in the final pairs and youngster Mick Webster in the last. Cherry Tree continue to climb the table, their victims this week Blackburn Golf Club A who went down 7-1. The nights other match saw strugglers Mill Hill and Park B battle out a 4-4 draw.
Division 2 saw title favourites Longshaw B demolish the Borough 8-0. Another fine break of 54 from Jonny Hannan helping them on their way.
It was almost an embarrassing defeat for skipper Lee Whittle in the final frame when he found himself trailing to Gail Costello.
However the thought of going back to the Longshaw as the only loser galvanised Lee and he cleared the colours in style to put his side back on top with 2 games in hand, Nearest rivals VIP Snooker A had to battle all the way against a resurgent Orchard WMC.
The visitors found themselves trailing 2-1 before Ibby Khan took the next to set his team on a 4 frame winning streak to seal the victory 5-3.
Longshaw A put themselves in the promotion race with a fine 6-2 win against the Hole I'th Wall. Again the first 4 frames were shared before Longshaw knuckled down to take the last 4 with ease to move up to third in the table.
Feniscowles' promotion hopes were dealt a serious blow as they went down 5-3 to nearest rivals VIP Snooker B.
The visitors found themselves 3-0 down before Rob Walsh posted a frame. Andy Allen took the next to put Fenny just a frame behind but when VIP took the next two it was match over.
Keith Grogan put in a marvellous display to take the last but it was to no avail. VIP B leapfrog Feniscowles in the table but they need a few more good results if they are to fight for one of the promotion places. The final match saw Blackburn Golf Club B throw away a 4-0 lead against Darwen's Anchor Hotel. Three of the opening four could have gone either way and the golfers will be pleased they took full advantage of the run early on. The result more or less guarantees both teams a mid table finish.
