Hot Rod inspires United to a fourth victory

Lancashire Telegraph: Joe Rodriguez Joe Rodriguez

JOE Rodriguez, the younger brother of Southampton and England star Jay, inspired Burnley United to their fourth home win of a stop-start campaign.

Hot-shot Rodriguez fired United in front and then goals from Steve Riley and Oliver Wood made the points safe as Burnley overwhelmed Thornton Cleveleys 3-0.

Charnock Richard posted the biggest victory margin, punishing bottom of the table Norcross and Warbreck 7-1 to open up a nine point lead at the summit.

Longridge Town clocked up a precious win, edging out Slyne with Hest 3-2 as Rick Coar (2) and Joe Melling did the damage.

In Division One, Luke Gornall helped himself to a hat trick as Mill St Peters picked up a vital 3-0 victory against relegation foes Ambleside United.

Thomas Hulme and Danny Richmond were first half scorers for Haslingden St Marys in Division Two, as they picked up a hard-earned point at Stoneclough.

Mill Hill St Peters are running away with the Division Two Reserves' title, cruising to a 3-0 win at Burscough Richmond as Dennis Hill, Jordan Freeman and Michael Jackson saw them pull nine points clear of Hurst Green, who crashed 4-1 at Lytham Town.

It was another day to forget for bottom club Todmorden Borough, beaten 4-0 at Croston Sports.

In the WLFL Presidents Cup, Hurst Green eased through to the third round of the competition as Danny Mort (2), Alan Coar and Chris Byrne saw off Cumbrians Dalton United 4-2.
