COLNE skier Dave Ryding is refusing to set any targets ahead of this weekend’s men’s slalom at the Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Ryding will be making his second appearances at a Games and will be hoping to build on the experience he gained from Vancouver 2010, where the slalom specialist placed 27th.

The 27-year-old, right, will be aiming to better that result but admits setting a specific goal is nigh-on impossible.

“It’s hard to put a number on it because with skiing there’s variables galore,” he said.

“Who knows what the snow’s going to be like or what the weather’s going to be like? It could be raining, it could be anything.

“I’ve just got to worry about putting down my best skiing, that’s all I’m going to be thinking at the start gate, and then the result will take care of itself.

“If I do a good run I’ll be happy and if that happens then anything can happen. But I don’t want to put a number on it.”

Ryding will be one of the last British athletes to compete in Sochi and is keen to make his mark after witnessing the country enjoy one of their best ever Games.

“You come to the Olympics and you see everything before you get here, so I was already getting in the vibe,” he added.

“Everyone’s doing great, so hopefully I can take a bit of that as well.”
