Kevin Gallacher column: Lucas Neill can bring crucial experience to Blackburn Rovers
IF Lucas Neill proves his fitness and he’s happy to wait for a chance then Blackburn might be as well bringing him back until the end of the season.
But it would have to be as cover as it looks like Grant Hanley, as the club’s new captain, looks like being the club’s number one central defender with Matt Kilgallon.
There is still the need for specific cover, though, and Lucas is experienced and he has played there before for Australia.
I know a lot people say never go back to a club but there are a lot of players who have left Blackburn who have not gone on to the dizzy heights.
Lucas has come back, he’s looking for a club, he’s older, he’s wiser and while I know people gave him stick for the way that he left Blackburn, I’m sure the fans enjoyed what he did for them before that and what he achieved.
So I don’t think it will be any skin off Blackburn’s nose if Lucas does come back for a three-month period provided he accepts it will be cover and as long as his wages are right.
He would certainly have a fight to get into the team as Blackburn are defending well.
Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Middlesbrough was their 11th clean sheet of the season.
You could see they had improved defensively even at the start of the season when they had Jake Kean and then Simon Eastwood in goals.
But when you have someone as experienced as Paul Robinson behind you, your confidence is higher.
That’s not to say you don’t have to cover the goalkeeper as much, it’s just that you don’t have to think about covering him as much.
Robbo is an experienced guy and he knows exactly what he’s doing. We might have lost our centre-half and captain in Scott Dann but we have got our goalkeeper back.
Robbo was in great form at Middlesbrough.
If you start with a clean sheet and come back with a clean sheet the least you have got is a point.
As I always say, there are a lot of teams in this league who I think Blackburn can be beating.
But at the end of the day it was a good away point and another clean sheet.
