Proud Blackburn Rovers skipper issues top six rallying call

NEW Blackburn Rovers club captain Grant Hanley has made it his mission to lead his team into the play-offs.

The 22-year-old believes Rovers have given themselves a ‘great opportunity’ of making the top six.

And, after taking over the skipper’s armband from the departed Scott Dann, Hanley is determined to guide them there.

The defender said: “The captaincy is something I’m looking forward to, it’s a great opportunity for me and hopefully I can take it in my stride and help us put a run of wins together and push up the league.

“We’ve put ourselves in a good place so we’ve got a great opportunity.

“We’ve just got to get a bit of consistency going now and hopefully we can push for those play-off positions.”

Hanley marked his first match since being appointed the club’s new captain with a goal as Rovers beat Blackpool last weekend to remain five points behind sixth-placed Reading going into tomorrow’s trip to Middlesbrough.

However it was not the first time this season that Hanley had skippered Gary Bowyer’s side as he previously deputised for Dann on four occasions.

It was during one of Dann’s absences from the team through injury that the Scotland international was sent off for violent conduct while wearing the armband in the 2-1 defeat at Wigan Athletic.

Hanley, who swiftly apologised to Rovers boss Bowyer, his team-mates and supporters, admits he has learned from the incident.

“It was daft what happened and people might have doubted me but there was never any doubt in my mind,” said academy graduate Hanley, who has captained Rovers at youth and reserve team level.

“I spoke to Gary after it happened and he assured me that he had full confidence in me.

“I realise what a big responsibility the job of club captain is especially at such a big club.”

Hanley was disappointed to see centre-back partner Dann leave for Crystal Palace on transfer deadline day but he has no doubt Matt Kilgallon will fill his boots.

Bowyer is expected to look for cover for Kilgallon and Hanley when the window for loan transfers reopens tomorrow.

The Rovers manager is also scouring the market for another striker and possibly a winger too after Josh King joined Ben Marshall on the treatment table.

King is set to be out for up to three weeks after sustaining a hamstring strain in the 2-0 home win over Blackpool.

Lee Williamson missed that match through concussion but he will return to Bowyer’s squad for tomorrow’s clash with Middlesbrough.

Adam Henley, who has been troubled by an Achilles problem, and the fit-again Corry Evans, after nearly four months out with ankle-ligament damage, could be part of the Rovers’ travelling party.

It's pleasing that the club appear to be having a real go at getting into the last playoff place. If we can bring in three quality players on loan, we will have a real chance. Just make sure that their loan periods extend just past the season end, so they can play for us in the playoffs.

Hanley ,this guy ,he just wants to play football, good lad we hope.

It's the gut feeling when they have a good season and we think we can build on this , then they turn on us, and we get quotes of "I want to go a bigger club to play with better players" example one , Neill when he left Rovers ,never went to a bigger club, went to the one that paid him the biggest chunk , Hendry twice left us ,went to join Man City , came back when Jack was throwing money around, got a sniff at Glasgow Rangers left Rovers in a heartbeat , sadly after three years at Rangers he only played 21 games , so they shipped him out to Coventry ,where he only played 5 first team games, Hendry left Rovers and is a lesson to go into oblivion ,a lesson young Hanley should consider , we used to say "it's better to be a goalie than a wingers" that really meant , moving around all the time is not having a good life.

Optimistic....

Take a look at our next fixtures. By the end of March we'll be lucky to still be in the top half of the table.

I hope next year we can push on, but we should have capitalized on Barnsley, Derby, Birmingham, Forrest, Charlton. All those games we should have won but didn't will ultimately cost us a playoff spot. The only problem is, next year, three good teams will be joining us in this league and three'mediocre' teams will leave the league.

I know we have had many dissapointing results this season, but I still think that on paper we should be around the playoffs and probably in a playoff spot.

For a man who has had so little to spend Bowyer has worked wonder's, and if he can repeat that feat with three quality loan signings, then surely we will have enough to have a real go.

Maybe we should wait and see who we get on loan before we decide if we have enough or not, but, I have to say nobody in this league this season frightens me, even QPR aren't anything special. And if we don't do it this year, i think we will next year.

I wonder if we have a recall option before the season ends. Because, I think we would need to get Songo used to the team and his position, if it looked like we were heading for the playoffs. Perhaps recall him in March to get him ready as a back up for the playoffs.

Don't know how good the Scottish league is though mate. I remember when we bought Goodwillie and most people in Scotland thought he would make it in the Premier league. He isn't looking like he will make the squad let alone the first team in the Championship thus far. Lol

Could recall Songo from Ross County,he's a c.b playing well and scoring goals 2/2. might be worth looking at.

Lol
We did play him the full 90 mins against Carsisle early on this season and I thought he looked quite a decent player. He came into what was really a make shift team, quite different to what we have now. We all know the Scottish Premiership as only one winner each year, the rest are much of a muchness, but the football played is similar to ours and wouldn't be so much of a change, perhaps a bit better players here but still the rough and tumble as in Scotland. He also has a 2 year contract with Rovers,so G.B must rate him.

Nice to see him scoring goals. I think if i was Bowyer I would keep an eye on him, just incase. I'm a bit concerned though that when he plays the opposition seem to score plenty of goals. In the two games he has played - Ross County have conceded two goals in both games against struggling sides, and didn't Carlisle put three past us?

Agreed, the only side that I have seen so far who have impressed me are Derby, I think they will go up in the top two and have the potential to stay there.

I think we will be a far more settled and experienced side next year, play offs an absolute minimum.

Actually they put 4 past us, but like I said it was a different team to what we have now.I understand what you are saying about Scottish football, but he seems to have settled quickly and we have players from lower divisions in our team who have stepped up to the mark. I just feel, rightly or wrongly,G.B. seems to only give contacts to those he wants to keep hold of. Those that are uncertain remain on loan .

For a long time now we have been a very unlucky team, maybe our luck is changing. An example being Cairney - didn't we initially try and sign Spearing, fortunately that transfer fell through, and then I think (not certain) we went for Murphy, and he chose Leeds. I think only then we turned our attention towards Cairney. If you asked any Rovers fan who out of the three would they chose and 100% would say Cairney over the other three. Little bits of luck like that can make or break you.

He plays in a team so he's a team player. The game and the team needs more players prepared to take individual responsibility. He made no more mistakes than Lowe does in a more critical part of the pitch so I'm right and you're wrong.
