Blackburn Rovers in market for Leicester City forward

Lancashire Telegraph: Martyn Waghorn Martyn Waghorn

BLACKBURN Rovers are in the hunt for Leicester City striker Martyn Waghorn.

The former England Under-21s international is free to leave Leicester and is understood to be attracting interest from Rovers boss Gary Bowyer.

Bowyer today returns from India where he has been holding talks with Venky’s over the possibility of boosting his squad before the transfer window closes next Friday.

If he gets the go-ahead from Rovers’ owners he is expected to launch a bid for one of the forwards on his shortlist, which is believed to include Waghorn.

Leicester are willing to listen to offers in the region of £450,000 for Waghorn – who they paid a reported £3m for from Sunderland in August 2010.

Waghorn will be a free agent once his contract expires in the summer and as he will be above the age of 23 – he turns 24 tomorrow – the Foxes would not be entitled to compensation.

That means clubs tracking Waghorn instead may attempt to sign him on loan until the end of the season with a view to completing a permanent transfer once his deal with Leicester runs out.

The South Shields-born frontman is being chased a by a host of Championship clubs.

But a move to Rovers could be the most attractive option to Waghorn.

He fits the profile of the player Bowyer is trying to bring to the club – young, British with scope to improve.

Rovers supporters saw at first hand Waghorn’s talents when he scored a fine goal for Millwall at Ewood Park last month.

Waghorn netted three times in 14 matches during his three-month loan stay with the Lions.

He has made two substitute appearances since returning to Leicester.

But the arrival of Kevin Phillips at the King Power Stadium has left Waghorn further down the pecking order.

Related links

Bowyer is in the market for a striker after allowing DJ Campbell and Ruben Rochina to leave on loan.

Leon Best, who has been linked with a move to Crystal Palace, is out of favour while David Goodwillie could yet head back out on loan.

Palace are, however, definitely interested in Rovers captain Scott Dann.

But it is understood they would be unwilling to match Dann’s salary or even his price tag should Rovers be tempted to sell their skipper.

Speculation yesterday also linked Rovers with Palace defender Danny Gabbidon and Hull City forward Matty Fryatt.

Bye bye Jordan. With West Brom, Fulham and now QPR all ready to offer him football at a higher level it looks like Jordan may finally get his move.

Tidy acquisition if Waghorn joins - young inexpensive, talented and obviously a previous link with Marshall....would be another good acquisition in addition to the signings of Cairney and Gestede....nice to see the squad developing -

am sure those fans of clubs fighting for automatic promotion with the 19th lowest average home attendance in the championship, only one new signing to a thin squad and their main striker and decent fullback being linked with a move away, will continue to try and gloat and still obsess about a lowly mid table imploding side like Blackburn. Personally after the past few seasons I like what I'm seeing at Rovers now.

1.) Blackburn have just got rid of Cambell and Rochina which are both attacking players on high wages.
2.) Leon Best will be leaving shortly too (another flop on high wages.)
3.) That leaves us with Rudy & Rhodes up front, meaning we need another striker as back-up
4.) QPR will not pay what we're asking for him therefore they'll go for a cheaper proven goal scorer in the devision,

Any guess's who they'll be putting in a bid for??? bye bye Vokes!! Whatch this space!

Yes the squad is developing nicely with getting the expensive dross out and young hungry players coming in. The job is only half done but coming on nicely.
A few more points now and we're virtually safe from the drop so we should be able to relax and play with freedom. I would like to see a more offensive approach in the next few weeks to see what these players are really capable of for next season.

Waghorn would be ok - but I would prefer Matty Fryatt as he has a much better goal scoring record than Waghorn, with a one goal every three games return. Plus he has more recent prem experence and would be a perfect partner for either Rhodes or Gestade.

Agree entirely Wild One, the plan willl defiinitely come together as long as we can keep Rhodes. The signings of Cairney and Gestade and this weeks outgoings (just need Best to move on now) are all very much to plan and it looks like Scott Dann will stay now. So we have just to keep Rhodes at Ewood and then get one more striker (Matty Fryatt) in and then the plan will have come together perfectly.

Cigars all round at the end of the season maybe!

On the contrary, Liverpool and Fulham are both showing interest but Fulham are only looking to offer £4 million, depending which reports you read Liverpool are putting an offer of £8 million together, I think that's a very good valuation.

Baldric strikes again, firesale?
Going out on loan so that we can use the wages freed up to strengthen the squad for the play off push
And knock you Gimps out in the final
Ahhh, the sweet scent of victory awaits the Rovers
Shame about the Dingles, so sad, the nearly men...

Matty fryatt is getting on now isnt he around 29 yrs old?He obviously cannot do it in the Prem or Hull would keep him, we need young up and coming players who can improve so GB is correct as long as his coaches are good enough to bring him on.
He is 27 and in his prime, and his experience would be superb to help with the two younger forwards we have as our main strikers. Youth is the way forward at Ewood but some experience is needed alongside that.
and by the same token - Hull let Cairney go remember and I am sure you would agree that he could do it in the prem!
Obviously not otherwise he would still be there.
