Non-league: Fell wary of Darwen threat
8:20am Friday 10th January 2014 in Sport
NELSON boss Mark Fell is refusing to count his chickens ahead of tomorrow’s North West Counties League Division One derby date with AFC Darwen insisting: “It’s a dangerous game.”
League leaders Nelson go into the game as favourites against a Darwen side who start the day in 14th.
But Kenny Langford’s visitors are unbeaten in four matches and Fell believes the Salmoners will travel with confidence.
“They have nothing to lose and everything to gain,” said Fell of Darwen.
“It is a very dangerous game for us because really Darwen have nothing to play for in the league so they can perhaps come here with the pressure off and play with a lot of freedom.
“Plus it is a derby and the players will be up for it.
“But we are playing well and I’m confident we can get the three points.”
Fell received a welcome boost this week with the news that Michael Morrison, who has only played a handful of games since breaking his leg while at Barnoldswick, has declared himself fit for the clash.
Fell added: “I gave him the rest of the season off because he was struggling but he has come back and trained in the last couple of weeks and he could figure.
“He is a very good player and has won this league with Ramsbottom so has all that experience to call upon.
“With it being a derby and the pitch being a bit heavy it is a day for the older heads rather than some of the younger players.
“It’s great to have Michael back in the fold.”
Fell, whose side have plundered an astonishing 81 goals in their 24 league games this season, is also hopeful that tomorrow’s clash beats the weather.
He added: “We want the game on, we haven’t lost one to the weather yet this season which is a testament to the amount of hard work that has gone on in improving the pitch.
“We will probably hold a pitch inspection on Saturday morning but will give the game every chance.”
