THE Under 17 Motor Club will be showing off their skills at the Autosport International motor show in Birmingham this weekend.

The annual event starts today at the NEC and runs until Sunday, with a number of East Lancashire drivers set to take part in autosolo demonstrations.

Blackburn father and son David and Simon Robinson will be driving at the event as well as Steve Butler, Dave Barritt and fellow Accrington duo Steve and Hazel Johnson.

Roger Barfield and Jamie Foster will also take the wheel as the Under 17 Motor Club offer free passenger rides to members of the public.

“We gave out 600 passenger rides last year and they were so successful that we’ve been asked to do it again,” said Steve Johnson.

“Today and tomorrow are the trade days when most of the business gets done and Saturday and Sunday are more for members of the public.

“A lot of people from this area travel down to the event.

“We will have 10 members there giving free passenger rides and the aim is to show that you don’t have to spend a lot of money to take part in motor sport.

“You can spend money if you want but at £25 for a full day you can take part in an autosolo in your road car with just a little bit of tyre wear.

“You can have a great day of motor sport for less than the price of a ticket for a football match.”

The Under 17 Motor Club are supported by Falken Tyres and they have been celebrating winning both the ANWCC Club Championship and the SD34 Championship.

“It was our first year in the SD34 Championship and it’s a fantastic achievement given that we’ve only been going for three years,” Johnson said.

“It’s very commendable for all of our members.

“We have 12 to 15 members who have scored points in the past year, which is a good number, and they enjoy themselves at the events. That’s the aim.”
