MANCHESTER City manager Manuel Pellegrini believes Blackburn Rovers will move up the Championship if they repeat the performance they produced against his side at Ewood Park on Saturday.

Pellegrini was impressed by Gary Bowyer’s team in the 1-1 FA Cup third-round draw.

He said: “I think it was a very close match and we had more options than Blackburn Rovers, more clear options, but we played against a very strong team here at home with lots of motivation.

“Disappointed? No. Of course everyone wants to win all the games but I repeat we played against a very strong team at home.

“I’m sure if Blackburn play the same way (in the Championship) they would maybe be in a different position in the table.”

City went into the tie on the back of a seven-game winning run which had seen them beat holders Bayern Munich in the Champions League and Arsenal and Liverpool in the Premier League.

But City were below par for most of the match.

However Pellegrini, who had no complaints with Dedryck Boyata’s late sending off and insisted his players did not underestimate Rovers.

The replay will take place at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday, January 15 and means City will have to cancel a planned trip to Abu Dhabi where they had been expected to play a friendly against Al Ain on Tuesday, January 14 and spend the rest of the week warm-weather training.

Citys finishing was a bit wayward by their standards but we did not give them many chances and we played them at their own game with some very classy football and we wanted some containing. City where not off form one bit as this article suggests. Gestede is making a big difference to this team and I hope Gary plays Rhodes with him on a regular basis and was surprised to see Rhodes on the bench on Saturday We have been calling for a target man all season and that was to play with Rhodes. Since Gary seems to like going with one up front I hope he does not keep the effective Gestede on his own up front and then bring Rhodes on during the game. I think if Rhodes had been on much earlier we might have even won this match. You have got the players now Gary and you need to be aggressive in games like you did at Leeds. No more lone strikers playing on the counter attack at home otherwise you will get the crowd frustrated again. Come on Gary don't sit back as you have done most of the season you have to go for it. Not to get a result against Doncaster will be a massive let down.

Fair points - but don't you think the fact we packed midfield meant we stifled City and restricted their chances? Playing 4 across midfield to accommodate Rhodes AND Gestede could have been suicide.

Also I think Bowyer showed some intent in the last 10 minutes (he has had some knockers on here about formation and tactics) – Rovers put on 2 strikers and City put on a defender all be it they had 10 on the pitch. Rhodes has played all season and apparently played through a knock he picked up in the Birmingham game during the Leeds game. Thought Gestede and Cairney were very good on Saturday.

There are knockers amongst the supporters of every team, of course. City got slated by certain "spoilt" City supporters for only getting a draw at Ewood.

GB is learning, it's his first full season as a manager and he will make mistakes, but he is putting a pretty good squad of players together that apart from being able to play a bit have passion and desire.

OK the will be comings and goings over the next couple of weeks, Palace are in for Dann for instance, but I am pretty comfortable that GB will replace the outgoing players with people who have the right attitude.

Will Dann go to Palace? I am not sure, because he runs the risk of having an unenviable record for a central defender, relegation from the PL with three separate clubs.

Well done all down Ewood (Manager, players and fans alike) - very creditable performance. Though you should admittedly expect this squad to perform at a higher level in the league be mindful that Doncaster will probably play to frustrate, particularly after this performance. City's great strength in not fearing you gave you space to play and because you played so well it was their eventual weakness. This isn't a negative, just stick in there and don't expect to hammer everyone, no league is like that, especially the Championship and you seem to have a level headed manager who knows this.

i reckon it was more about giving rhodes a break. i think that was a sensible decision, as was the decision to bring him on later when we had a chance to perhaps take the game and avoid the replay.
i can't see bowyer benching rhodes at any point in any significant league game, so it'll either be rhodes on his own or with one or both of gestede and campbell. it's about having options and the addition of gestede gives us that.

Pretty fair comments TMT, we are slowly improving and though this was a one-off game we can take this and the win at Leeds as a couple of good performances to start the new year. But its the wins against teams like Doncastor that we need to get in the bag and its these that will help decide our season.
