FIT-again Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper Paul Robinson hopes he has done enough to keep his place between the posts for this Saturday’s Championship home clash with Doncaster.

The former England number one made an emotional return to the Rovers goal in Saturday’s superb 1-1 FA Cup draw with Manchester City after 13 months on the sidelines.

And Robinson showed he is fully recovered from the blood clot on his lung that threatened his life with an excellent late stop from Jesus Navas which ensured Gary Bowyer’s side will head to the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday week for a replay.

But before that match there is the visit of Doncaster to Ewood Park.

Robinson must now wait to see if he gets the nod over Simon Eastwood who has taken over from Jake Kean between the posts.

“We’ve got two very good goalkeepers here but I don’t think I’ve done myself any harm for selection for the weekend,” said Robinson.

“I’d like to think I’m in the manager’s thoughts now and I can build on the performance against Manchester City, continue playing and help get this club up the league.”

Robinson returned to full training last month after putting the most harrowing ordeal of his life behind him.

He played in behind-closed-doors friendlies at Brockhall and as an overage player for the club’s under-21s team before discovering he would be granted a first-team return by Bowyer.

“The manager told me in midweek and asked me if I was ready to play – I could have snapped his hand off,” said Robinson, whose previous appearance for Rovers was a 4-1 home defeat to Cardiff City on December 7, 2012.

“It’s been a long, long road for me. The last 12-14 months have been difficult but this makes it all the worthwhile.”

Robinson discovered he had a blood clot on his lung last Easter after he started coughing up blood following back surgery.

But never once did he feel like giving up on a stellar career which has seen him play 41 times for England.

“I certainly never wanted to finish my career like that,” said Robinson.

“At 34 as a goalkeeper I feel as I though I have a good four years at least left in me. So I owed it to myself to get back fit and get back playing again and Saturday was a very happy day for me.”

Robinson, who is determined to help Rovers get back to the Premier League, was mightily impressed by the display against City.

“It was a great team performance as no-one gave us a chance,” said Robinson. “To come off the pitch a little bit disappointed that we’ve not knocked one of the best teams in the world out shows how far this team and club has come.”
