Full-time: Blackburn Rovers 1 Manchester City 1

ROVERS produced a magnificent performance to hold FA Cup favourites City to a draw in today’s pulsating third-round tie at an electric Ewood Park.

And if any team deserved to win it was Gary Bowyer’s impressive Championship side.

They fell behind – undeservedly – on the stroke of half-time when they switched off from a corner.

David Silva’s left-wing delivery was flicked on by Edin Dzeko to the unmarked Alvaro Negredo, who turned the ball home from close range.

There were calls for offside.

But they were forgotten 10 minutes after the restart when captain Scott Dann brought Rovers level.

Again it came from a corner, swung in by Ben Marshall, as Rudy Gestede’s powerful, downward header was spilled by Costel Pantilimon in the City goal.

And there was Dann to side-foot home his first goal of the season.

It was a goal which forced a replay, which will take place at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday, January 15 (7.45pm).

And, despite their hectic schedule which sees them fighting for glory on four fronts, Manuel Pellegrini’s men will be grateful to get one as they finished a terrific match on the ropes after they had Dedryck Boyata sent off five minutes from time.

All the talk before kick-off centred around Rovers boss Bowyer’s decision to hand fit-again Paul Robinson goalkeeper his first start for the first team since December 7, 2012.

And the former England number one, who is now fully recovered from the blood clot on his lung that threatened his life, certainly did not let his side down.

Robinson was barely tested in the first half.

Rovers, whose rested top scorer Jordan Rhodes started on the bench, kept their shape and discipline to restrict City to little in the opening period and when they won back possession, they used it intelligently.

It was the hard-working hosts who forced the first save of the afternoon when a corner from the excellent Tom Cairney was met by Dann, whose thumping header went straight into the hands of Pantilimon.

The giant Romanian goalkeeper, in for current England number one Joe Hart, was one of seven changes made by Pellegrini to the team which started their 3-2 win at Swansea City on New Year’s Day – a win which meant City remained one point off top spot in the Premier League.

But their line-up still contained players of the calibre of David Silva and it was the wonderfully gifted Spanish playmaker who wasted the best chance before the break when he side-footed over after Boyata – who was his side’s weak link throughout – pulled the ball back across the box.

Rovers responded with an opportunity of their own when a neat passage of play ended with Lee Williamson slipping the ball into the path of Chris Taylor who, from just inside the area, could only blaze over.

Four minutes later and the visitors were in front as Negredo notched from close range to send the 7,000-strong travelling supporters into raptures.

But City's lead was wiped out in the 55th minute when Dann – who pushed Cairney all the way for the man-of-the-match honours – made the most of Pantilimon’s horrible error.

The famous old ground was rocking and Taylor was not too far away after he got in front of Joleon Lescott to meet Jason Lowe’s cross from the right.

But the home fans should have been silenced when Negredo somehow headed wide with the goal at his mercy after Robinson parried a curling Dzeko effort into his path.

Robinson then made a superb stop, down low to his right, from substitute Jesus Navas.

By that stage City boss Pellegrini had also introduced the immense talent of Yaya Toure in a bid to force a winner.

And Jesus Navas should have provided his manager with one after James Milner sent the winger through with just Robinson to beat.

But Rovers also fancied their chances and Bowyer threw on Rhodes and DJ Campbell.

And the two combined, not long after their arrival, when Campbell sent Rhodes clear down the right before powering into the middle to meet Rhodes’ centre and head wide from 12 yards.

If City were not rattled then, well they certainly were after Boyata was booked for the second time for a stupid challenge on Campbell.

Pellegrini swiftly replaced Silva with defender Pablo Zabaleta – a huge compliment to Bowyer and his players.

The tactical switch came just a minute after Cairney had collected a Campbell cutback and curled a brilliant left-footed shot inches past the post.

Although Rhodes chipped over, that was the closest Rovers came to claiming what would have been an incredible victory.

Rovers: Robinson, Henley, Dann, Hanley, Spurr, Marshall (Campbell 81), Williamson (King 64), Lowe, Taylor, Cairney, Gestede (Rhodes 81). Subs not used: Eastwood, Kilgallon, Rochina, Judge.

Goal: Dann 55.

City: Pantilimon, Boyata, Nastasic, Lescott, Clichy, Milner, Fernandinho (Yaya Toure 64), Javi Garcia, Silva (Zabaleta 88), Negredo (Jesus Navas 75), Dzeko. Subs: Hart, Kompany, Kolarov, Lopes.

Booked: Nastasic, Boyata.

Sent off: Boyata 85.

Goal: Negredo 45.

Referee: Michael Oliver.

Attendance: 18, 813.

Day full of positives today. Fearless & Stunning all round performance from our boys, great to see Robbo back, nice to see us go all out to try and win again. Definitely feels like we have turned a corner in the last couple of weeks & we can stick a run together at the business end of the season. Watch your backs dingles, we're coming for you.

Proud to be a Rover. Played some good football against a top top side.

It's got to be play-offs now. Got to be!

Good job we'd already signed Tom and Rudy before that display today lol!

We'll probably get wasted over there but who cares. City fans very impressed with a young Rovers side, saying we played better football than last time they were at Ewood in PL!

Excellent hard working performance. - deserved draw. Cuty may have underperformed that was as much to Rovers as their inability. The fact that they brought on Ya Ya Tourre Zabaletta and Navas shows how desparate they were not to loose today.

Great to see a fit Robinson back in goal where he counts is his experience in talking to the defence something that has been lacking from our new keepers. Even looked positive on crosses - were we trying to sell him or could he be the bit in thre jigsaw that allows us to press on up the table.

Impressed with Gestede his heading and workrate were excellent - not felt as positive about Rovers for a long time

Brilliant game, City know they have been in a game today and looking at what they have done to PL teams this season Dangerous Dave's snide comments dont do either side credit.

OK I expected us to get a right good going over but while we may lack the ethereal skills of David Silva and other City players on show we more than made up for it with a 100% team performance.

Gestede was excellent up front the entire midfield worked overtime to keep a classy City as quiet as possible and the defence with Robinson back in goal bellowing his orders was frankly outstanding.

GB got his tactics right again and Rovers fully deserved at least a draw out of this game.

Great performance and Bowyer got his decisions right. Good to see he's not afraid of dropping JR if we're playing a 4-5-1. Our midfield covered so much ground with fantastic energy, something we hadn't seen for ages until GB took over. And showed some nice passing on top of that industry. We should go to City without fear and put in another brave performance.

Totally agree with your comments there, Robbo's experience in talking the defence through the game shows the difference between him and the other two.

Gestede gets better as he gets fitter but Also Tom Cairney went out and proved a point today, he has the quality to boss the midfield.

Excellent game of football that showed that Blackburn can deliver, nobody below par, everybody committed and organised, GB should be very proud today.

Well done, Bowyer. What a change from that Wednesday performance. Rested Jordan, picked Robbo, good subs at the right time. Great performance following on from the Brum and Leeds games.

Team set up well from the start and their effort and skill was superb. Josh was great in his cameo sub role too. Hope we have now 'turned the corner' and can continue to play this well.

The Rovers fans were brilliant too towards the end!

Excellent performance - but not a one off. It's been coming together over the last few weeks and could be a good last half of the season. Once more it's enjoyable watching Rovers play. What a massive transformation from the last few years. Reckon if Gestede and Rhodes could be merged into one player we'd have the perfect striker - hope the two can gel into a formidable partnership. Cairney deserves the praise he's getting but Taylor, Marshall and Spurr are proving great signings. At last a manager we can have faith in.

Excellent performance and GB really got the best out of the squad. Good to see Robbo back and Rudi was excellent. Top all round team performance. The FA cup is a chance for championship clubs to test themselves against the premiership elite. Some have the richest club in the world with arguably the best squad in the country hanging on for a draw whilst some go to lesser prem teams such as Southampton and show they really arnt up to premier league opposition and crash out. This can only set Rovers up for a good second half to the season and a push for promotion, we can soon make 13 points up on second. Now, where are those dingles tonight?????

well.....what can i say....i'm a little bit worse for wear after a few lubricating beverages (post match of course).....

i would have been more than happy for the lads to have lost 1-0...but my hat is well and truly off to Gary and the lads....they made City look ordinary and put in a fantastic performance, and not happy with a draw, Gary threw on JR at the end feeling that we could even win the tie.

as i've said before, i'm one of the first to criticize but on this occasion i would like to shake GB by the hand....even if we loose at the Etihad, we can hold our heads high....and lets face it our club and it's fans have had little to hold our heads high at in the past few years....but this draw (yes draw) will give the lads a much needed boost in their confidence.

i mean it from the bottom of my heart lads and GB....well done and thank you from the fans for giving us a match we can be proud of.....really!
well.....what can i say....i'm a little bit worse for wear after a few lubricating beverages (post match of course)..... i would have been more than happy for the lads to have lost 1-0...but my hat is well and truly off to Gary and the lads....they made City look ordinary and put in a fantastic performance, and not happy with a draw, Gary threw on JR at the end feeling that we could even win the tie. as i've said before, i'm one of the first to criticize but on this occasion i would like to shake GB by the hand....even if we loose at the Etihad, we can hold our heads high....and lets face it our club and it's fans have had little to hold our heads high at in the past few years....but this draw (yes draw) will give the lads a much needed boost in their confidence. i mean it from the bottom of my heart lads and GB....well done and thank you from the fans for giving us a match we can be proud of.....really! crankitup

Don't worry about D!ckhead Dave, him and Knackersley are now in a phone box trying to call the Samaritans. 2014 just keeps getting worse for them. Unfortunately both lines are busy with Mug and Darener having a good cry about their little Jordan Rhodes Cup-tied theory getting ripped apart. That really was p!ss funny.
Tell me, you consider yourself a Rovers fan. Why do you abuse and denigrate the name of one of the greatest players ever to wear a Rovers shirt? Why do you continue to corrupt his name? Have you no sense of the clubs histor history? It would appear not. You stride aross this site like an uneducated yob. Shame on you.
You abuse his name simply by using it for your endless tirades.

Not at the game then? I had presumed that you would have turned up to cheer City on, after all you are only interested in the PL.

You missed a **** good performance from a good, young Rovers team who can play direct a la your hero Lardarse, or sweet, tidy football on the ground, something we haven't seen for ages down at Ewood.

Real fans turned up again today, we honestly didn't miss you or your spiteful prejudices.

Brilliant result against one of Europes top sides. Thank goodness other folks on here are at last seeing that GB is the right manager for us and is getting a a quite decent squad together at the Rovers. Still a way to go though yet but we are definitely on another journey into the next chapter in the story of Blackburn Rovers FC.

you really do have your 'head stitched up your ar5e' - no snide comments from me just an honest opinion which you are incapable of producing - so just to repeat myself so the 'thickets' understand - a good cup game and credit where credit is due - the Rovers played outstandingly well against an under par Man City - after all City do sit second in Premiership which obviously confirms even to the likes of you that they can play better than they did today - on the other hand if the Rovers played consistently well week in week out they might have been sitting at the top of the Championship!

Excellent performance, very well done to the players and management.

Can't remember the last time I saw a Rovers forward win so many headers, if Gestede can persistently perform at that level he and Jordan are going to be a real handful.

So glad to see Paul Robinson back between the posts, this should give the back four some extra confidence.

Real fans turned up again today, we honestly didn't miss you or your spiteful prejudices.
you really do have your 'head stitched up your ar5e' - no snide comments from me just an honest opinion which you are incapable of producing - so just to repeat myself so the 'thickets' understand - a good cup game and credit where credit is due - the Rovers played outstandingly well against an under par Man City - after all City do sit second in Premiership which obviously confirms even to the likes of you that they can play better than they did today - on the other hand if the Rovers played consistently well week in week out they might have been sitting at the top of the Championship!

Owd Nick. I am keeping his name alive. There is nothing disrespectful in my posts - or haven't you noticed?
Most of your posts are disrespectful to the club, it's management and supporters but can't get angry enough today to go for the jugular so I am asking you nicely to please stop using Venkys as an excuse for no longer supporting the club. We all understand that living on a pension is not easy and its a struggle for an octogenarian to get to Ewood so if you must follow our progress from your armchair try to be a little less bitter. Take a leaf out of Dareners book; you might get a bit more out of life
You are another who disrespects Eckersleys name, presumably to appear funny. I have news for you. You're not. You insult me and DD on a regular basis because we have different opinions than yourself. I have more news for you. There's thousands of other ex-attendees at Ewood who share our views or did you not notice the empty blue seats today? Lastly, your insulting insinuation about my personal life does you no service. Rather like your disparaging reference to Eckersley's name, eh?

Note to Ekersley and Dangerous Dave.

City were not "under par" Dave, that's what I mean by snide comments.

David Silva was pure magic, Milner, Garcia, Fenandinio and Negedo were constant threats with quick, slick passing that threatened to open us up time after time.

But Rovers played brilliantly to stop them and on occasions beat them at their own game.

The only player under par for City was Boyata, who was run ragged on our left flank for the entire game and to be perfectly honest the referee should have had him off at least 20 minutes before he finally lost patience and red carded him.

Even Burnley fans are coming on here and saying well done, while bitter and twisted ex Rovers fans like you can only offer extremely grudging comments.

There is absolutely nothing whatsoever we fans can do about what has gone on over the last couple of years, nothing. I and many other fans will I am sure be critical in the coming months on a game to game basis, but for me that's all it will be.

I came on here this afternoon buzzing from what was probably one of the best Rovers performances in an awful long time, and you two knocked the wind out of my sails for a while.

And the sad thing was you are both so bitter and twisted you weren't even there.

From now on you are on ignore because to true Rovers fans your comments must be treated with the contempt they deserve,

Such a joy to round off my evenings entertainment by reading my fellow Rovers fans rip apart Old Knackersley and D!ckhead Dave and their puerile replies.

Knackersley, I particularly enjoyed your tantrum and your attempt to deflect the shame you bring on the name of a Rovers legend, a man who, unlike you, never ran away from adversity. I will even forgive you calling me an uneducated yob, as actually nothing could be further from the truth. I know I am the better man, and forgiveness is therefore what social convention expects of me. I do understand you were just venting your frustration and you don't think clearly when you are wound up. I do hope this helps :-)

The early criticism was probably frustration, he arrived for a months loan both injured and unfit, so his first appearances were not impressive, at a time when we were desperate for strikers. Credit to Bowyer though, he obviously saw a bigger picture and if he can get more performances like that out of him then he has that different attacking dimension we need.

A bit soon to say better than the Yak, he arrived with a goal scoring pedigree and scored about 15 ? goals in a team demotivated and disorganised by Steve Kean, I know we were relegated that season but we would have been down by Christmas without Yak !

I do understand you were just venting your frustration and you don't think clearly when you are wound up. I do hope this helps :-)
Good Lord! Where and when were you brought up? If you claim to be "the better man" it should be settled with a fist fight!!! Now, that is proper "social convention". At least it would not be played out on these pages......
Can't go slapping a pensioner Bazzer, Queensbury rules, my boy. Old Knackersley does not like uneducated yobbish behaviour.
Being nice to Knackersley and Dingerlous David doesn't work. I am back to being Angry with them. I offered an Olive Branch and they snapped it in my face. The gauntlets are off and on the ground. They won't like me when I'm Angry.

Seven thumbs down but only one response from David. Would the others please tell me where I am going wrong?
