STEVEN Burke has been left out of the Great Britain squad for the final round of the Track World Cup series later this month.

Burke, from Colne, is one of a number of high-profile stars rested for the meeting in Mexico which runs from January 17-19.

The 25-year-old, who won Olympic gold in the men’s team pursuit in London in 2012 has competed in each of the previous three rounds but has been given time off to prepare for the Track Cycling World Championships which take place in Cali, Colombia, next month.

British Cycling performance manager Shane Sutton said: “We’re in a good place in terms of qualification points for the World Championships, and this has created an opportunity for some of our younger riders to step up and compete at a World Cup.

“This will give the coaches a gauge of where the riders are at, and will also provide invaluable experience for the young squad members.”

Dani King is the sole Olympic champion named in the squad.

King, who won team pursuit gold at London 2012, leads an 11-rider squad to Guadalajara with two-time junior world champion Danni Khan making her elite World Cup debut in a youthful women’s sprint group alongside Victoria Williamson.

Also making their debuts are Khan’s fellow academy riders Chris Latham, Jacob Ragan and Oliver Wood, while John Paul returns to the squad as a guest rider.

Andy Tennant, a 2012 world team pursuit champion, is the most experienced male in a youthful group.
