EX-Latic Dave Jones plans to use the lessons he learned while at Wigan to hand out an education to his old club as Burnley bid to bounce back from defeat in the Championship’s Lancashire derby.

Jones, 29, spent two years with the then Premier League outfit before moving to Burnley via a loan spell at Blackburn – and he is relishing the prospect of a trip back to the DW Stadium and boosting the Clarets hopes of climbing back to the summit of the Championship after they were toppled by Middlesbrough.

“I try not to get carried away about going back to old clubs but I know a lot of people there and I’ll be up for it like any other game,” said the former Manchester United youngster.

“It will be a difficult one because they’ve done well since the new manager’s come in and I’m looking forward to it.

“It’s a nice club and I’ve got some good friends there.

“I think I was ready to move on. I’d learnt a lot in the two years that I’d been there and I felt that I wanted to move on, although I did enjoy my time there.

“I have fond memories and it was a good learning experience for me playing there, I learned a lot but now I’ve moved on and I’m looking forward to playing for Burnley against them.

“It was a good decision to come to Burnley.

“I’m really enjoying my time here and hopefully I can do my best for the club in the future.”

Jones knows that Boxing Day’s slip is in the past and the chance to get back to action quickly is a bonus for all at Turf Moor.

“The staff and players here don’t dwell on disappointments,” he said.

“If we want to do well this season it’s about how we correct them and it’s a good opportunity to do that at Wigan.

“I’m looking forward to going there but my full focus will be on putting the Boxing Day result behind us and getting a good result.

“Wigan have good players and a good squad and I think since the new manager’s come in they’ve done well.

“It will be difficult. But as with every Championship game it’s always tough, it’s just how you play on the day.

“We’ll definitely be up for the game.”

Jones insists the Clarets can recover from the Middlesbrough loss and added: “We went into that game with high hopes wanting to build on winning the last game but it wasn’t to be.

“We’ve set high standards from day one in the season so it was difficult to take.

“But I’m sure we’ll get our spirits up and our focus will turn to the Wigan game.

“We can’t control what they do we just want to control what we do on the pitch.

“It didn’t quite happen for us at Middlesbrough.

“I thought they played pretty well and it was a difficult game, one that we think with our experience and how well we’ve done this season we would be able to cope with. But it wasn’t to be and we’ll have to bounce back.

“I don’t think we were 100 per cent and they took full advantage of that.

“We have to learn from the mistakes and get up for the game.

“In this long season it’s how you respond to disappointments that dictates your season.”
