BURNLEY could not conjure another shock against Manchester United in the FA Youth Cup, despite dominating much of the game.

The Clarets, who caused an upset at Old Trafford with a 4-3 win in the same round last year, threatened another with a strong first-half performance.

But two second half goals – the first a terrific, unstoppable strike, the second a solo effort – meant Premier League opposition progressed.

Burnley, who were semi-finalists in 2012, gave an excellent account of themselves in this competition again, however.

Right back Cameron Dummigan linked wonderfully well with winger Bradley Jackson, and the pair combined in first-half stoppage time to create a chance for Khius Metz that the striker was frustrated to lift over the bar.

After Joshua Harrop had tried to find a route to goal almost straight from the kick-off, cut out by Waqas Azam, United required a goalline clearance to keep the Clarets out.

Luke Daly had a firm hit from the edge of the box after a clever corner routine thumped away at the left post, then a minute later Jamie Frost stung Joel Pereira’s palms from distance.

Burnley had their Premier League opponents on the back foot, finding gaps in United’s midfield diamond.

Frost looked to find a vital inroad, but progress was halted by Ryan McConnell’s timely block on the edge of the box.

Frost and midfielder Kevin Ly linked up, with Ly taking the return pass on the edge of the box to bring a good save from Pereira.

The Clarets kept the attack alive and Alex Whitmore followed up by testing the keeper again with a speculative long-range effort.

Frost should have done better when presented with Christian Hill’s pull back from the byeline, but the striker opened his foot too far and was never in danger of forcing the keeper into action.

For all Burnley’s pressure and dominance, they were undone by a moment of quality on the hour.

There appeared to be little danger, with Burnley getting claret and blue shirts behind the ball when United advanced.

But there was nothing keeper Conor Mitchell could do to stop Andreas Pereira’s 25-yard strike.

Sean Goss tried his luck with a couple of speculative efforts, the second of which whistled wide.

Metz went off to huge applause in the 72nd minute, replaced by Ntumba Massanka, who looked to liven things up for the home side with his first touch resulting in an ambitious long range effort.

But it was from another forage by the substitute that United broke and killed the game, with Wilson finishing well.

Frost went shoulder to shoulder with Callum Evans and went down just inside the box, but penalty appeals were waved away.

Frost had a hat-trick of late chances, one blocked, two saved and Jackson was stopped in stoppage time but the comeback was not forthcoming.
