‘We must toughen up’ blasts Rovers boss Bowyer

Lancashire Telegraph: Gary Bowyer looks on during the midweek defeat at Ipswich Town Gary Bowyer looks on during the midweek defeat at Ipswich Town

A FURIOUS and frustrated Gary Bowyer demanded that his Blackburn Rovers side show greater mental strength away from home after their travel woes continued.

Rovers have now lost five of their nine matches on the road this season after they went down to what the boss labelled an ‘unacceptable’ 3-1 defeat at Ipswich Town on Tuesday night.

Like in the 3-0 reverse at Brighton & Hove Albion last month it was a defeat entirely of their own making as they gifted Ipswich all three of their goals.

Going into the game Bowyer had challenged his players to keep the club’s first away clean sheet in the Championship in 14 months.

Rovers have kept five clean sheets in their last six matches at home.

So when questioned why they are unable to replicate that miserly form away from Ewood Park Bowyer said: “It’s got to come down to our mentality a little bit.

“We’ve got to be tougher and horrible to play against away from home like we’ve shown when we’re at home.

“It was not acceptable in terms of the goals that we gave away.”

Luke Hyam was given all the time in the world to fire the Tractor Boys into a fourth-minute lead.

Jordan Rhodes brought Rovers level but more shocking defending allowed Ipswich to regain the advantage through Carlos Edwards and a thoroughly miserable night was capped late on when goalkeeper Jake Kean’s horrendous mistake gave Frank Nouble the opportunity to make the game safe.

Tractor boys captain Edwards believes his goal three minutes after the restart was crucial.

Edwards said: “I think the timing of the goal just after half-time was really important for us because they had the momentum from the way they finished the first half. It probably knocked the wind out of their sails a bit.”

Although Rovers never truly recovered they were still in the game until Kean’s inexplicable error.

“Jake’s not going to hide from it, it’s a mistake from him,” added Bowyer.

“He’s big enough and brave enough to accept that. On Saturday he made a save that helped win us the game but tonight at 2-1 his mistake gave the game away when we were still in it.”

On a night when centre-back Grant Hanley injured his arm and right-back Todd Kane picked up his fifth booking of the season, ruling him out of Saturday’s trip to QPR, the arrival of new striker Rudy Gestede from the bench for his debut was one of the few positives Bowyer could take.

“He won some headers, he was a physical presence up there and showed what good potential he has got,” added the Rovers chief.

Well, yes I have to agree, Rovers do need to toughen up.

Noticeable in the last few home games, especially Leeds, that opposing players cannot only tackle they aren't afraid to leave a boot in to let us know they are there.

Leeds for instance must have got away with at least 7 or 8 such tackles before the Ref took his first yellow card out. and that didn't stop them doing it.

Rovers are far too naive in that respect, I am not condoning dirty play, far from it, but this is a very tough, physical league and if we can't compete physically with the same intensity as our opponents we are going to continue to give away stupid goals and subsequently loose games.

It isn't rocket science, anyone who watches Rovers can see it.

Just like the managers of every other club....they all go on the same media training sessions, no-one ever says anything to the press that can be misconstrued as being negative because the press will jump on it immediately.

We don't know what's being said or done behind closed doors; and we have no need to either.

No point in harping on about Gestede get him in the starting line-up. You brought him on loan don't tell me we are going to have another loanee whom warms the bench, from what we have seen from Campbell he can't cut it with Rhodes. We have all seen far too often that this side for whatever reason can't win away from home and I can't really see us getting anything except a good hiding on Saturday unless changes are made and various players pull their fingers out away from home.
For starters forget playing Lowe and Williamson in the middle and Cairney out of position again. We need creativity, surely Rochina can do 60 mins plus, surely Dunn can play. At least we can make changes at right back and Henley can come back in, unfortunately Kane is not the player we all saw last year. Things need sorting out and fast before the season drifts away. Lets be honest not seen a good side at Ewood this year, granted not played everyone yet but all positions in the league are up for grabs. Sort it now Bowyer.

Exactly Nick, do these people not listen to after match interviews of any other manager in any league? It is a standard mantra taught on all sport phsycology courses these days.

"We must toughen up"
It seems Bowyer and the players appear to know what's needed judging by recent articles in the LT but we don't do anything to put the wrongs right.
"We need to start winning away ", "We need to cut out the silly mistakes", "We must toughen up" ......When are we going to start doing it?

We need to put in a few shuddering tackles to let the opposition know they're in a game, like Leeds do. That can't be difficult to explain to the players. Likewise, getting off to a quick start instead of starting when we are already a goal down. It's not rocket science.

this may upset the stay positive posse but here goes, Quote 1 "“We’ve got to be tougher and horrible to play against away from home like we’ve shown when we’re at home" and Quote 2 “It was not acceptable in terms of the goals that we gave away.”.....now correct me if i'm wrong Gary, this is your job....you've had enough time to realize these issues and correct them, i'm not being funny mate but you are the manager....therefore manage, yes the players have there part to play in this but the buck stops with you.....if the lads are not playing the way you want, then drop them....which ever way you want to play this Gary it's up to you....after all it's you who made excuses for them being a young squad who are still gelling,,,,it's you who made excuses blaming the officials....therefo
re you and you alone can put this right and manage the team.

the we're a young team who are still gelling was sort of acceptable in the beginning but we're almost at the half way point now and thats just not cutting it Gary......get it sorted!

I have to admit this is driving me nuts, it's got to the stage where I really don't expect anything away from home, and if we actually manage to scrape a point it's a bonus.

It isn't just this season though, it's been a long time since we were reasonably effective on our travels. without going through the records I would probably go back as far as Mark Hughes's team the season before he left for City.
