Chris Arnone Column: We need to build some momentum
1:40pm Tuesday 3rd December 2013 in Sport
IT was a weekend of highs and lows in the Blackburn Hawks camp.
After the elation of a late win over Sutton Sting at home on Saturday there was a sting in the tail of part two of the double header.
For in the reverse fixture on Sunday we suffered a 5-1 defeat.
Not for the first time this season we just weren’t at it, so we must make sure it’s the last time.
Momentum is easier to sustain than it is to build so we must get on a run and not keep switching off like we have done a number of times this season and suffer the consequences.
We played pretty well on Saturday and went two goals up early.
We let them back into it, but we weren’t helped by a lot if silly penalty calls.
The referee didn’t have the best game for either side. A lot of strange penalties were called.
We’re trying to clamp down on the penalties we are taking because there are too many and we are putting ourselves under pressure; teams are punishing us on the power player.
Five on five we’re a match for any team in this league.
Ironically, we had a power play late on against Sutton on Saturday and got a 3-2 win with just over 30 seconds to spare.
Similar line-ups faced each other the day after, but we had a different attitude.
I guess we presumed we were going to get gifted it on a plate because we won on Saturday.
But teams aren’t going to gift us anything this year, and I guess the way we had won the first game meant they were going to come out harder in the re-match, and we just weren’t prepared for it – even though we had talked about it.
They scored three goals in the first period and we gave ourselves an absolute mountain to climb. It’s one to learn from ahead of this Sunday’s trip to Whitley Bay.
On the plus side new signing Jon Adams got on the scoresheet in the 5-1 defeat. He hasn’t played for a year and a half and just looks like he’s going to improve with every game.
