‘TOP pro’ Tommy Spurr has given himself a fighting chance of being fit for Blackburn Rovers’ Championship clash at Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.

Rovers boss Gary Bowyer was resigned to losing the left-back for the trip to the Amex after he injured his ankle in the win over Middlesbrough last weekend.

But Spurr is responding well to treatment and could have recovered in time to take on the Seagulls.

“He’s looked after himself unbelievably well and done everything right so he’s given himself a great chance of being back quicker than we thought, which is magnificent,” said Bowyer, who initially ruled Spurr out for a minimum of two weeks.

“I don’t know if the Brighton game will come too early for him but we’re certainly not ruling him out at this stage, that’s for sure.

“Full credit to him for how he’s been since the injury happened. He’s followed the advice of the medical team to a tee.

“He’s a top pro and I can’t praise him enough for the way he’s looked after himself.”

Spurr has started every league game for Rovers this season since his free-transfer move from Doncaster Rovers.

The 26-year-old has arguably been the best – and certainly the most consistent – of Bowyer’s 12 summer signings.

“He came into the team and made the right impression straight away,” said Bowyer.

“The supporters love him and we knew they would because we knew what he would give us.

“He’s been first class for us and the early signs are that he will be back quicker than we thought, so that’s great news.”

Bowyer is still looking to strengthen his injury-ravaged squad before the loan transfer window closes on November 28.

But if he is given the chance to, any new recruit will have to have the right character – just like Spurr.

“We do our homework our when we bring players into the club,” said Bowyer.

“Tommy’s a great lad to have around the place, he’s always smiling and he’s always making people smile.

“We can’t praise him enough for the impact he has made.”

Matt Kilgallon also came off against Middlesbrough.

The centre-back hurt his hip after being upended in the box by his former Leeds United team-mate Jonathan Woodgate – a challenge for which the Boro captain escaped punishment.

But Kilgallon is back in training and will be fit to face Brighton.

Bowyer is hopeful Leon Best will return after the striker missed out last weekend with a groin injury.

David Dunn, who has been out since the start of September, could come into contention.

The midfielder is in his second week back in full training.
