CYCLING star Steven Burke could target an ambitious double when the track cycling World Cup meeting gets underway at Manchester tomorrow.

Colne’s Burke is an almost certain starter in the men’s team pursuit, an event he won gold in at last year’s London Olympics.

But the 25-year-old may also be Britain’s representative in the individual pursuit, an event he races in less frequently.

The final line-ups for both events have yet to be announced but it would be a major surprise if Burke, who took the European title in the team pursuit with Ed Clancy, Andy Tennant and Owain Doull earlier this month, does not retain his spot in that four.

Qualifying begins at noon tomorrow with the final taking place later that evening.

Team GB have already confirmed that the individual pursuit rider will be either Burke or Tennant.

The East Lancashire ace took a bronze medal in that event at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and it could be that both ride the team event with the decision on the solo ride made on Saturday morning before qualifying. The final of that event is on Saturday night.

Burke is entering the event on the back of some excellent form with an impressive showing in the opening Revolution meeting of the season coming after his European win.

Burke and team-mate Owain Doull assumed an early lead in the series after the Manchester event last weekend.

Burke was second in the flying lap behind Clancy and was again beaten by his Team GB team-mate in the scratch race.

But, along with team-mate Doull, the pair took second spot in the Madison time-trial and that helped his Telegraph All-Stars team open up a four point lead at the top of the standings ahead of the second round in Glasgow next month.

Burke’s fine form has not been lost on his team-mate Doull, who is hoping to learn as much as he can from the double Olympic medalist.

Doull said: “It’s the team pursuit we’re targeting, especially with the team we’ve got – that’s what we’ve been training for.

“We’ve got Burkey and Ed who are Olympic champions and then Tennant who’s been a World Champion. They offer a wealth of experience for me.

“Sometimes you’re in training and think of it as normal and other occasions you realise you're actually competing and training with guys like Ed, who is probably the best team pursuiter in the world. It’s pretty amazing.

“It’s a good team atmosphere and everyone gets on well. To get into the team would be great and a win is the goal on our home track.”
