Massaro in repeat Open clash
10:20am Wednesday 16th October 2013 in Sport
LAURA Massaro will face Kasey Brown in the quarter finals of the Delaware Investments US Open later today – a re-run of the 2011 final that the Chorley ace won.
The world number two booked her place in the last eight with a hard-fought second round victory over Nour El Tayeb at Drexel University in Philadelphia.
Massaro had to come from a game down to eventual win 6-11, 11-2, 11-9, 11-7 in 44 minutes.
“I hadn’t played Nour for such a long time, and she took me by surprise in the first game,” said Massaro. “I was pretty terrible in that game though! After that it turned into a bit of a catfight, I had to really get myself up to stay in it.
“I’m happy to get through that one. Hopefully I can refocus for the quarters now.”
She now faces the unseeded Australian who beat British number two Jenny Duncalf 11-5, 11-6, 11-4 in 22 minutes.
Massaro, a former Albany High School pupil, beat Brown 5-11, 11-5, 11-3, 11-5 to win the US Open two years ago.
Should she overcome the world number 11 today, it could set up a clash with world number three Raneem El Weleily who beat Massaro in last year’s US Open semi finals.
Massaro was surprisingly beaten in the semi finals of the Carol Weymuller Open in New York last week by Camille Serm. She also lost in the last four of the Malaysian Open last month to El Weleily in a mammoth 78 minute five-game clash.
