BLACKBURN Rovers boss Gary Bowyer has handed a trial to free agent Robbie Simpson.

It was revealed on Monday that Rovers could face a transfer embargo under Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules if they do not win promotion this season.

But Bowyer is continuing to go about his business as usual – and that includes giving former Cambridge United, Coventry, Huddersfield Town and Oldham targetman Simpson a chance to impress.

Bowyer said: “We’re just having a look at him.

“I know one or two clubs are also looking at him so it’s just a chance to assess him in training.

“He looks fit and he’ll continue to train with us for a couple more days and maybe next week as well.

“Then we’ll see how it goes.”

Simpson had two seasons playing in the Championship for Coventry, scoring seven goals.

But the 28-year-old has spent the majority of his career in the lower leagues.

His most prolific spell came in the Conference for Cambridge when he netted 17 times in the 2006-07 campaign.

That earned him a summer transfer to Coventry, where he stayed for two years before signing for then League One Huddersfield for £300,000 in July 2009.

Simpson’s time at the Terriers was hit by injury and after just one goal and five starts, he joined Oldham on a free in January 2012 after an initial loan.

He was part of the Latics side that dumped Premier League Liverpool out of the FA Cup last season.

But Simpson has been without a club after he was released in May.

Bowyer has been chasing a tall and physical striker since the loan transfer window reopened.

Whether Simpson fits the bill remains to be seen.

But one player Bowyer would definitely like to keep at Rovers is midfielder Tom Cairney, whose loan from Hull City runs out on New Year’s Day.

Bowyer said: “He’s a very good, technical player and we were fortunate we were able to get him when we did.

“I think everyone would agree that they would want Tom Cairney to stay at our football club not just until May, but for a long time.

“That’s something we’ll be working toward, that’s for sure.”

Managing director Derek Shaw said at Monday’s Fans’ Forum at Ewood Park that Rovers might face a transfer embargo or a fine next season for failing to comply with FFP – depending on whether they remain in the Championship or go up to the Premier League.

Bowyer said: “What we’re doing at the moment is just focusing on what we can achieve both on and off the pitch and we’re working very hard at it.”

Rovers return to action at home to Charlton on Saturday (3pm).
