Burnley Tornados keep Lancashire Rosebowl title in American football league

THERE’S no stopping Burnley Tornados, who rounded off a whirlwind season by retaining the Lancashire Rosebowl title with a thrilling last gasp victory over rivals Chorley Buccaneers.
The Tornados, who clinched fifth in the National Britbowl Finals last month, held off a spirited Chorley challenge to win the narrowest of margins, 40-35, in front of an enthusiastic crowd at Blackburn Rugby Club.
There was an early blow for Tornados, though, when they lost their defensive captain James Macken with a shoulder injury and he was unable to continue in the first half.
But the two teams proved to be very closely matched, and at the break it was all-square at 20-20.
Then it was nip and tuck all the way as the action unfolded at a furious pace with Flynn Griffith and Sam Zak on the scoresheet for Burnley.
The Buccaneers fought back - only for Paddy Berkins to heap extra pressure on the Chorley team with a knockdown, allowing Zak to register on the scoreboard again.
With seconds left, the Buccaneers edged ahead with a conversion, but the Tornados saved their best to last as Gino Bradshaw jumped in with the winning points to send their support wild with delight.
Delighted head coach Paul Brammer said: “I can’t praise the boys highly enough, they gave everything for the cause.
“It was an incredible way to win a final and the whole squad deserves so much praise for the way they have performed.”
Brammer reserved special praise for the club’s fans, adding: “The Tornados fans have been brilliant all season, and I hope that Tornados football has given them a real love for this special game that we have.
“Winning the Rosebowl and finishing fifth nationally was a special achievement.”
