Burnley striker's shock at England call
DANNY Ings wants to link up with the England under 21 squad on the back of another Burnley win after admitting he did not expect to receive his first international call-up.
Ings has been named in the under 21 squad for the first time after netting 10 goals so far this season, and is due to link up with his new international team-mates tomorrow night.
Gareth Southgate’s side travel to San Marino on Thursday and then face Lithuania in Ipswich five days later.
The 21-year-old is delighted to have been selected and hopes he can link up with the squad after helping the Clarets beat Reading this afternoon and stay top of the Championship.
“It’s a crazy time for me and I didn’t expect it, even though I have been scoring goals,” said Ings, who has thrived this term after two seasons hampered by injuries.
“I am over the moon at the call-up. It’s a dream come true for me, especially after the two years I have had and I am honoured to be selected in such an elite group of players.
“It’s exciting and all new to me. I’ve never had a sniff before, but it’s an opportunity that I am definitely going to take.
“I’ve had a lot of nice tweets and messages from Burnley fans, which is appreciated.
“I’ve had a bad couple of seasons with injuries, but I’ve dug in and worked hard and now I’m getting the rewards for that.
“The main thing at the moment is that we have a massive game against Reading and we need a result there.
“After that, I can concentrate on England.”
And Ings was full of praise for Clarets boss Sean Dyche, whose work has also been recognition this week with the manager of the month award.
“I’m delighted for the manager because not only is he a great manager, but he’s a great people’s person as well,” Ings said.
