Dave’s Holden on after broken ribs
GREAT Harwood’s sidecar veteran Dave Holden has no plans to call it a day at the end of the season.
The 66-year-old racer survived a spectacular 100mph crash at Darley Moor Race Circuit last month, leaving him with three broken ribs and his bike badly damaged.
“Racing is in my blood, I’m not going to retire,” he said.
“I love the buzz of racing too much to pack it all in. It would be hard to live without racing.
“My children and my wife worry about me going out on the track, especially after the recent accident, but I’m determined to carry on.”
Holden returned to the scene of the crash at the Darley Moor track last week, where he is still firmly in the hunt for the Darley Moor Sidecar Championship title.
“With the main bike out of action I’ve had to ride the Two Stroke bike, and it has proved a bit temperamental.
“I was going well at Darley until the carburettor split, but I’m still leading with just one round left.
“Providing the bike holds out then I can still win the title.
“After all that’s happened in the last few weeks that would be a special end to the season.”
However, Holden’s incredible bid to be crowned the Ace of Aintree for the 12th time went up in smoke when he was forced to retire with engine trouble in the final round of the season.
“That was hard to take because I’ve made that title my own in recent years,” he said.
“But finishing runner-up for the first time in over a decade isn’t too bad I suppose.”
Holden crashed at Aintree four years ago, fracturing his hip, four ribs and a small bone in his back as well as puncturing both lungs.
“I’m still on pain killers from the accident I had in August,” he said.
“You don’t mend as quickly as you do when you get to my age, but my reactions are still good.
“There’s no way I’m going to throw the towel in, there’s a lot still at stake this season and I’m determined to finish the campaign with more silverware.”
