Leicester City 2 Blackburn Rovers 1 report and reaction
BLACKBURN Rovers boss Gary Bowyer was left to rue the ‘contentious’ decision that he believes cost his side a draw in tonight’s 2-1 defeat at Leicester City.
David Nugent’s penalty in first-half injury-time, controversially awarded after Ritchie De Laet went down under a challenge from Tommy Spurr in the box, doubled Leicester’s advantage after Lloyd Dyer had opened the scoring.
Rovers were awarded a penalty of their own, in the 70th minute, which Jordan Rhodes converted.
But the Foxes held on for a win which takes them to the top of the Championship.
Bowyer said: “If we had gone in 1-0 down at half-time it might have been different.
“It’s a big call from the linesman. I just felt the referee needed to be stronger. He’s got the same view as me. We’ve looked at it again and our view is that Tommy Spurr played the ball first.
“There was only one lad from the Leicester team that appealed for it and I think he was trying it on. David Nugent was laughing before he took the penalty when he had the ball in his hands.
“It was a contentious decision right at the death of the first half.”
