Mac gets Blackburn off to a super start
BLACKBURN’S darters were sharp off the oche as the new Lancashire Superleague season hit the bullseye on Sunday.
And there was also a first day success for Burnley as they too started on a high with an impressive win.
Blackburn kicked off their Elite Super 8s campaign with a home clash with Stockport and they ran out 7-3 winners, much to their delight.
The Stacksteads-based Chris McTiernan was the top man on the day as he managed a hugely impressive 88 average and Lancashire County star Dave Place said: “It was an excellent start for us.
“Chris threw very well and I was averaging 79 with a few of the other lads throwing mid-70s and hopefully we can keep that going now.”
Burnley began their Super 8s campaign on a high with a decent crowd at Burnley Miners cheering the locals to victory at the Plumbe Street venue.
Burnley ran out 7-3 winners over Eccleston with Graham Lalor proving his decision to skip Burnley CCs Lancashire League match with Rawtenstall in favour of throwing arrows was a wise one.
Lalor had an average in the 80s, even though he admitted his finishing was not quite what it should have been.
But after the win he still managed to make it back to Turf Moor to watch the end of Burnley’s resounding win, which keeps them in the hunt for second place in the Lancashire League table.
Andy Whittaker was the top man with 74.70 as Chorley beat Bolton 7-3 but Longridge were beaten 8-2 by Fleetwood.
Graeme Banks was the toast of West Craven as his average of 77.08 helped his side to an impressive 6-4 win at Leigh to start their campaign on a high.
Todmorden drew 5-5 at Wigan Cental in the Men’s First Division but edged the tie 19-16 on legs, while Ribble Valley got their Division Two season off to an ideal start as they beat Chorley Central.
Carl Barlow was the main man for Ribble Valley as he threw an average of 76.41. Blackburn Borough beat Haslingden 6-4 in Division Three but that game was closer than it looked as Borough just edged the match 20-19 on legs.
In the Premier Division of the Women’s Super League, Blackburn began with a 5-3 loss at Fleetwood, while Darwen won their derby with Burnley as they came out on top 5-3 with Heather Draper throwing the top average of 45.55.
Todmorden went down 6-2 at Oldham and Todmorden Town didn’t have a much better day one as they were beaten 5-3 by Accrington.
