BUDDING Olympic gymnast Katie-Ann Barton is a huge step nearer her goal after being picked for the England squad.
Year 8 pupil Katie-Ann competed in the Challenge Cup in Guildford when she came 10th out of the 58 girls competing in the junior squad.
She said: “I am really proud to be selected for the England junior team. At the moment there are some really good girls in Great Britain.
“I would like to compete in a world championship. I may not make the squad for the next Olympics but I hope to be in the one after that.”
Her dad Gary said: “Unfortunately in Guildford she had three falls, without these she would have easily come 2nd.”
She completed the four disciplines of floor, vault, bars and beam.
Katie-Ann said: “On floor I was 5th overall and just 0.15 off being 3rd.
“I will be going to Rushmoor Gymnastics Academy in Aldershot in September for a weekend of training with the England squad and will be away over my 14th birthday.
“My next competition is the Bill Slater Team Championships in October.”
Katie-Ann has a rigorous schedule which involves 26 hours of training a week and she has permission from school to leave early on a Tuesday so she can put in a ‘double shift’ at Bury Gymnastics’ Club.
She took up gymnastics when she was four and has been training ever since.
National junior coach Barry Collie praised her ‘excellent attitude’ and her success in getting a double back into her floor routine.
Gary added: “We have applied again to Lancashire Rising Stars for funding and if we are successful then the money and support from UCLAN will go a long way to help her compete nationally with the best.”
