Pleasington festival was curtain call for another season of footy fun
THE Forbes Pre-Season Football Festival, staged at Pleasington Playing Fields, provided the perfect curtain raiser for the big kick-off.
Now in its 13th year, the festival included boys and girls teams in every age group from under sevens to under 16s as well as a senior men's competition.
Inter Madrassah Organisation carried off the Senior Men’s title with a nail-biting penalty shoot-out victory over their Blackburn Combination rivals AMT Lawyers.
There was more local glory when East Lancashire Juniors edged past Foxhall Juniors to lift the Under-10 title, while Mellor were also on the mark from the spot, beating Blackburn United on penalties.
“It was a tremendous tournament, with teams from as far afield as Birmingham, Wales and Yorkshire taking part,” said organiser Colin Hargreaves.
“Fifty teams competed and with an attendance of nearly 4,000 it was a fantastic weekend.of football.
“We’ve had poor weather for the last three years, but it was sunny and warm so everybody enjoyed it.
“When we launched the festival in 2000 we never imagined it would become this big, so we are really proud it is still going strong.”
The Forbes Festival is run in conjunction with Blackburn with Darwen Council and Mr Hargreaves added: “We are already planning for the 2014 festival and we’ve had a lot of interest already.”
