Accrington fighter shines with GB boxing squad
SHELBY Fielding is boxing clever after being invited to train with some of the best fighters in the country.
The 18-year-old from Accrington took part in a Great Britain training camp in Sheffield recently and has now set her sights on pulling on an international vest.
Shelby, who is a member of Blackburn with Darwen Police ABC, is looking to impress Great Britain coaches ahead of a number of international bouts to be held at the end of the year.
She is hoping to attend further training camps next month.
Yaqoob Hussain MBE, head coach and founder at Blackburn with Darwen Police ABC, is certain Shelby has what it takes to earn her national debut.
“Shelby has only been with us since April but she has already shown she is a very good boxer,” said Yaqoob, a national referee and judge. “She is aggressive, very dedicated and eager to learn. She has all the attributes to become a good boxer.”
Shelby has only fought three times, winning twice and losing once – but it was a victory in a show in Derby against a top class opponent that caught the GB coaches’ attention.
During the Sheffield training camp, Shelby worked under some of GB’s top coaches including Amanda Coulson who was one of the country’s most successful boxers and is now part of the coaching set-up.
Meanwhile, Yaqoob has been busy in recent weeks holding boxing sessions at venues across the borough in conjunction with Blackburn with Darwen Council’s Sports Development team.
The first session was held at Pleckgate High School where 10 youngsters took part with the second held at Darwen Leisure Centre when around 25 young people participated.
“All the young people enjoyed the sessions and are looking forward to the next time,” said Yaqoob who was assisted at both venues Christopher Smith from the development team.
