Salesbury's delight at Birchwood success
5:55pm Tuesday 13th August 2013 in Sport
SALESBURY claimed the glory of the Houldsworth Solicitors Ribblesdale League’s Birchall Cup as they saw off the threat of Clitheroe at Chatburn Road.
After battling their way through the group stages and beating Edenfield in the last four, the Red Caps’ U18s performed well on the night to take the prize.
The game was a tight affair and runs were hard to come by on a damp surface and against excellent fielding from Clitheroe.
For the Red Caps, the game turned once Jack Stones got going with the bat, supported by Callum Grantham and then Sam Bristol.
They moved from what looked like being an 85 to 90 total to having a testing 118 to defend, an impressive outcome.
Taking the field Salesbury had clearly learned their lessons from earlier rounds and tightened things considerably and used less aggressive tactics, which were just the job for the evening.
After a difficult opening spell they introduced spinners Josh Bristol and Eddie James, backed up at the other end by Adam Robinson and Scott Wharton and they tied down Clitheroe and slowly but surely turned the screw as they won the trophy.
