BURNLEY have rejected a bid from Hull City for Charlie Austin - but the Tigers remain confident of sealing a deal for the striker.

Hull recently enquired about Austin and have now returned with a bid, understood to be not far from the £4m mark.

The Tigers remain confident of agreeing a fee imminently but the Clarets have rejected the offer and insist that there remains other interest in the forward.

Burnley have received enquiries from a number of clubs for Austin, who has only a year left on his Turf Moor deal.

The Clarets had previously indicated that they wanted £7m for their top scorer but Hull are optimistic they will agree a price significantly lower than that, potentially before the end of the week.

Newly promoted Hull failed in an attempt to land Celtic’s Gary Hooper last week.

Hull may not have an easy task surviving in the Premier League next season but Austin is expected to be tempted by the chance to play in the top flight for the first time.

Only four years ago he was playing in non-league for Poole Town while working as a bricklayer.

Clarets boss Sean Dyche said: “The way I see it with Charlie is he’s a good player who has scored a lot of goals for us.

“There will be people interested in a player like that but we’ll have to wait and see what happens.

“We are not actively looking to sell him.”

Burnley have been unable to agree a new contract with the striker.
