AN elderly woman died after falling down the stairs at her Southampton home, an inquest heard.

The body of Margaret Violet Floyd, 87, was found by her neighbour and taxi driver Keith Simmons on January 21 this year.

Mr Simmons, who was due to pick her up from her home in Shayer Road, Shirley, borrowed a key from another neighbour to enter the property.

At her inquest, it was heard how her body was found at the bottom of the stairs and a broken tea cup was found on one of the steps.

Southampton coroner Keith Wiseman read out a letter from her GP, which said Ms Floyd endured bouts of vertigo.

Recording a verdict of accidental death, Mr Wiseman said: “This lady lived a long life and it’s a great pity when it ends with something as dramatic and sudden as this.”
