UPDATED: Appleton sacked by Blackburn Rovers
11:45am Tuesday 19th March 2013 in Sport
By Andy Cryer, Blackburn Rovers reporter
MEETING Appleton
GARY Bowyer will be asked to take charge of Blackburn Rovers until the end of the season - after Michael Appleton was sacked as manager following just 15 games in charge.
Rovers' reserve boss, who stepped in for Henning Berg earlier in the campaign, will step in for Appleton, with Terry McPhillips being made his assistant.
The decision was taken to dismiss Appleton after week-long talks with global advisor Shebby Singh, with managing director Derek Shaw and operations director Paul Agnew not involved in the decision.
The Rovers boss was dismissed today along with head of recruitment Luke Dowling, coach Darren Moore and and assistant manager Ashley Westwood.
Rovers officials and Shebby Singh were unavailable for comment.
When contacted by the Lancashire Telegraph, several Rovers' players were unaware of the news.
Following Sunday's 1-1 draw with Burnley to leave Rovers four points above the drop zone, Rovers owners have stunned supporters by opting to axe Appleton after just 15 games.

The finger needs to be pointed at the management now, as they KEEP on getting it wrong. But Bowyer in charge until the end of the season and give him the job if he does well. Otherwise, get someone in who will produce winning entertaining football. I love to win, but I cannot stomach any more of Appletons style and it is no longer a winning style anyway.

MA will need to go either now or at the end of the season...!
simply not good enough for BRFC.
anyway the bigger problem...
Managers..
those with an ounce of experience have become too big for their boots, they simply have become outrageous in their demands.
money and power wise...!!
and also the many of the elderly managers are stuck in their ways and don't want to change with the modern times.
The biggest problem with mangers is that most are quite rich and hence have little motivation or fire left in them to make a success of things.
Nor are most passionate about clubs.
The biggest issue with managers is....!!
thy're all after massive long term contracts...minimum 3 years.
and massive salaries....!
which they usually don't deserve....!
In my view Mangers should only get 1/2 year contracts at most.
& performance related...!
I think the modern game even more so is about day to day points tally which keeps teams up. Winning games...!
its about bringing better players in.
and building a team spirit in the dressing room.
BRFC or any club will find it hard to attract the best managers..!
because ultimately these greedy people want to do things in their way.
Unfortunately, life has changed
football has changed
and the running of clubs has to change..!
means directors and clubs have to work together even more so to run a club successfully.
call em footy directors or whatever title you give em....!
you need a couple of people to run the footy side.
regards the manager, I think really we should be calling em the coach as that's what they are essentially.

Venkys should realise every decision they have made has been a disaster and get out. Of course they will not. He talked a good game and alot of sense however he simply didn't deliver.
Whether he should have been given more time - that is the big question.
Unless the Board have someone lined up (and I suspect the chances of that are nil) I would ask Gary Bowyer to resume charge for the last 9 games.
After that, if we stay up an experienced manager is required.
It is now time for someone in the boardroom to take responsibility for the ****-ups this season.
We cannot continue with divisions in the boardroom.

Otherwise, get someone in who will produce winning entertaining football. I love to win, but I cannot stomach any more of Appletons style and it is no longer a winning style anyway.

Just had a text from a poster on here alluding to the next manager ? He his a trusted poster so will be interesting ?
Experience, experience and more experience. Nothing less.
Arte et labore
The Venkys just totally blew our last chance of staying in this league, relegation not only beckons I reckon it is a flying certainty now.
There are more clowns on here than in Billy Smarts Circus if they think that the Rovers will either a) Stay-up or b) get an experienced manager in at the end of the season.
Bowyer had three games and got lucky and the was not really managing in a pressure situation, everyone knew it was only for a handful of games but yes he managed the team in a very good manner. But lets get real - GB has less experience in managing a club than either Berg or Appleton and the pressure he will now be under to get results to keep us up will kill him and the club. We never made Tony Parkes our permanent manager and for very good reasons. Same applies to GB.
And as for getting an `experienced` manager in for next season -even Donald Duck would turn us down now after this latest ridiculous sacking.
Who in their right mind would come here with this lot in charge with a record of them sacking managers after a dozen games or so....posters mentioning Hughes and Souness are either taking the mickey or off their rockers. Even Paul Ince has been mentioned - I can hear Incey laughing at that all the way over here in China.
The Venkys and Shebby have put the final nail in the coffin now. Shebby is the snake in the grass who has injected the final shot of venom into the club to get back at the ridicule he has had quite rightly directed at him from Rovers fans.
Some fans wanted Shaw and Agnew out, well that will probably happen now too.So its all down to the snakeman again. God help us. Woman and children first...
Most fans wanted lazy players like Murphy and Etuhu out of the team and out of the club, well we are about too get them both back in the side with GB....he will be under stricter orders than Appleton from the Venkys, also it saves the V`s all the hassle of the arguments at the end of the season when MA would be trying to persuade them to give him cash to bring in better players to improve the team.
It was all pear-shaped before this - but now it is completely flat. Like a tire that has finally deflated and lost all hope of staying up......
God Rest the Rovers, the b*stards killed my team.

I liked GB's manner last time he was in charge....unassuming and seemed a decent person....the players obviously respect him, hopefully he'll steady the ship again ( the new Tony Parkes).... No doubt about it Appy's approach didn't work......didn't like him from day one because he did the dirty on B'pool But I was willing to give him a chance...until I realise Appy's philosophy would close football grounds and make us all egg chasers.

Unfortunately getting rid of most of our creative players has backfired big time.
The fact is that we have stopped scoring goals as much and rarely look able to create any decent openings. The team play ok from the back into midfeld. But we need someone who can help us work the ball better through from the midfeld to the attack. The movement in this department is unbelievably lacking by both th midfielders and the strikers. Jordan Rhodes looks like he is struggling as you can see he wants to move around more but had obviously been told to hold a central position up front.
This, coupled with a few players that I would not even gve contracts to in the division below is why we have and will continue to struggle.
Who will come in?? Nobody of any calibre cos they have no money to spend and cannot bring any players in til next season, so the writing would be on the wall for them also.

Are you really a football fan? Would you welcome back a man who relegated your Spurs? Who barely won a game? Your view is welcome but dont presume you know more than we do. It's not your club.
Im a Spurs fan living in Essex and maybe I have no right to comment on here but I love football so get involved when I can. I live in Colchester and I saw Portsmouth play here when Appleton was in charge. He had offensive players in his team but was ncouraging his players to keep the ball by playing the ball back rather than look to penetrate a poor Colchester defence. The guy is clueless, he got the Blackpool job becasue nobody else wanted to work with the chairman and only got the Blackburn job as he is mates with Derek Shaw. He is an awful manager and I dont see why he is linked with other jobs all the time. As for Shebby and Venkys, you are lumbered I think but either Shebby or Derek Shaw has to go. Im afraid though that the job will now be unappealing to a top manager. As for the current squad, Appleton had a better squad than a lot of teams and results should have been far better. The common thread to our plight is the Venky's. If they don't know what they are doing, either employ a board that does or pack up and ship out.
I can't blame Burnley fans for enjoying our plight, I'm old enough to remember how much I enjoyed the John Bond era and when Burnley ploughed their trade in the 4th Division and who can forget the "Staying Down Forever" original plane flight over Turf Moor.
Every dog has it's day and Burnley could have had their day on Sunday but they couldn't even beat the worst Rovers side I've seen in years.

What happened then was Appleton was appointed on 11th January.
Bowyer didn't fancy the manager's job last time and was content to go back to running the youth team.
So the big question is will he be in charge until the end of the season?
If it was up to me I would be talking to Nigel Adkins straightaway before some other club comes calling.
However, the Boardroom split needs sorting out one way or another or the club will never progress.

The biggest problem for me this season hasn't been the sackings, its been the bizarre appointments. A six week search yielded Henning Berg a man with little experience and then after that MA a man with a distinctly average record in the lower leagues.
It's just sad to imagine who they could have appointed, for example back when they sacked Sam Allardyce we could easily have picked up Brendon Rogers from an impressive Swansea then in the Championship, he was developing a good brand of football similar to what the Venkys said they wanted. Also less then two weeks after Appleton was appointed Nigel Adkins became available, and again he would have been a perfect fit.
So please after running this club disastrously for two and a bit years can the people in charge make the right appointment and also step aside and let someone else run the club properly.

Good luck Blackburn and I hope you regret the day you booed Steve Kean!

The guy (and by association his sidekicks who I presume he brought in to help him) was strategically and tactically inept.
Appleton, just like Berg, if they had had any nous about them would have brought in an experienced number 2 immediately upon appointment.
Appleton was so arrogant that he thought he had the ability to do it himself and brought in equally poor inexperienced sidekicks namely his mates.
Moore was West Broms U18 coach for goodness sake.
If he had a degree of humility about him he would have had the confidence to admit his failings and brought in a fantastically experienced coach to work alongside him. He would now, in my opinion probably still be in a job.
Having seen his sad touchline persona at every single game it is clear that Moore and all the other personnel gave him no support whatsoever.
Millwall was the first game that I saw Moore get off his seat from under his beanie and puffa jacket at the very time he should have been earning his corn.
By the way - the Blackburn coach / official that gave every single player a conciliatory word and pat on the back as they left the field disconsolate and making their way down the tunnel at the Reebok having just conceded in the last minute of the game was not Appleton or Moore who just stood there but Mr Bowyer.
Once again, best wishes Gary you truly do care, and for that we are truly grateful for in this situation we could not be in better hands.

This whole situation is getting more and more out of hand. I've been living in the Caribbean so haven't seen rovers play too much this season, so when I saw us beat Arsenal last month I was surprised to see an organised team playing good defence. The problem with MA is that one month later when watching us play the quarter final at Millwall he was using the same futile tactics. The tactics against Arsenal worked because you can hardly play expansive technical football against a team full of technically superior players, so keeping it tight and hoping you get a lucky goal ( and CKR's goal was exactly that, a scuffed shot of the post). MA decided that was the way to win games and the brand of football that developed over the last month was disgraceful and Im pleased he's been sacked.
The biggest problem for me this season hasn't been the sackings, its been the bizarre appointments. A six week search yielded Henning Berg a man with little experience and then after that MA a man with a distinctly average record in the lower leagues.

However, this latest news is a stunner to most sensible fans after taking aside the postings referred to above.
What the immature posters neglect to see or comment on, is the fact that the sacking of MA will not only class him as a failure (that will follow his career for quite some time) but also means that family breadwinners are now out of work. Yes all may spout "what about the compo?" but the crux of it is that he and his team are out of work. Also it reflects badly on a) The owners who are obviously out of their depths owning the club but also reflects on b) The fans for their failure to get behind the manager and players with passionate strong support. Consider the attendance at the Millwall game 7K hardcore true Blue and White supporters and then look at the added 9K plastic fans who turned up at the derby on Sunday, a lot of them there simply to cause trouble or "just for the crack". What a prime example of a good strong fan base! My "ss!
So there we have it 3 sets of failures.
Yes I am a Claret fan, but with the honest wish to see BRFC avoid becoming another Portsmouth and to see some sense of a return to reality for the club. So if any of you want to retaliate with the usual diatribe about my posting on a BRFC then feel free because those who do, will show to the rest what a bunch of morons they are who don't deserve a decent team

Any manager needs his own squad and his own pre-season to get the job done. If Venkys want instant success they should appoint someone who has a track record and some capability of delivering.
They, and they alone, are responsible for the shambles that our Club has now become. The players must be totally demotivated and the emotional cost to the fans is huge. For all the worthy intent of the various supporters' groups there is nothing that we can do as fans except sit back and watch this slow-motion car crash.

Perhaps as insiders think they are working together on their own schemes and cunning plans , or perhaps Venky`s benefit and not the benefit of Blackburn Rovers , ask yourself the question why is Hendry (Keans chaffeur) still at Rovers ? there has got to be a reason why he is there , he was a total failure as a defensive first team coach at Rovers and his personal history of swindling and domestic violence is a complete embarrassment to the football club , surely there has got to be another REASON why he is still here , what is the hidden agenda ? are they trying to devalue and disgrace the club so badly that there will be no opposition if the club gets asset stripped ,? what is going on ?

On a serious note Appleton,s only contribution was to openly highlight the sad state of the playing squad.
Sadly he showed a lack if ability to bring any positive changes on the field except maybe an improvement in defence.
Lack of self confidence to having the ability of bringing all the players to 100% accountibility seem missing and although he had good intentions, he had not the strength of character needed to succeed.
Question is: do the Venky,s have the balls and money to undo all the damage they have created.....they seem incapable of in making the right decision and continue to rely on "advisors" !!!!!!
Oh the pain of not knowing what next from these Indian business people with ego,s great then their knowlege of the game will ever be, so it seems.
Best wishes to Bowyer....he did nothing wrong the last time around and I hope he gets the support from "management" and from the Supporters....COYB.

You are being selective in your examples. I went to Burnley during the premier league season through my work. I went the season after. Massive different in support and even more massive now. I read some of your fans last week saying they werent going anymore, not renewing tickets and not going to the derby game. You are too biased.

It would be nice if we scored more than the occasisional goal in the remaining fixtures.

The reason there are so many comments on here from your better off opponents is that we haven't laughed so much since the last episode of "Mrs Browns Boys".
We can't help cracking up at the comical goings on at deadwood lmfao.
Regarding the comment on not beating you when your SH#T. Well when the FA provide weak officials, allow excessive injury time" for DUNGs" dramatics and allow a goal that was off side then yes your right , that's why we didn't beat you but it was a pleasure to see that we out played you in both games which is like a win.
As for our club being a joke there is only one that is having everyone In football and the media laughing at BRFC yes that's right BRFC laughing stock LMAO.

Jack Walker lived in Jersey and he no doubt paid less tax there then he would have had he lived on the mainland.
He blew this extra cash funding his favourite football club. And after a little bit of glory what happened?
THIS!
You see, what he's accidentally done is give you lot ideas above your station.
Now you all seem think you DESERVE to have a good side. You don't. You deserve exactly what you've got. A succession of bald headed, clueless managers whose only skill is to tell lies and talk absolute sh*it.
You can't just BUY success long term. You have to earn it. Where do you lot get off thinking you deserve to be in the big League with the PROPER football clubs? You don't. You need to get real.
You're just a p.iss pot Northern barnacle of a town. And you're a set of MUGS.
It's the descent from glory to the current sh*it pot status that hurts you the most. And don't try to give it the big one about "34 years" because I can tell you're well gutted.
You see - none of this misery would have happened if Jack had paid his tax. In a way, the reason you are suffering today is because of Jack Walker.
But I can see WHY he went to Jersey I suppose. Who'd want to stay anywhere near Blackburn?

Well the plot thickens , apparently Singh went to see a top notch corporate lawyer along with his chum Hendry to see if he was legally entitled to sack Appleton , irrespective that he never hired him , as far as Singh`s contract goes he has the right to sack any manager , so consequently instead of meeting with and telling Appleton personally he sent him a letter (handed to him by the office girl) telling him he was sacked ,that was the treatment of all Appleton`s people he brought to the club ,they all got the same treatment ,is this how we treat our employees/ex employees disgraceful behaviour ,these are honourable men that have lost their jobs .
