FULL TIME: Blackburn Rovers 1 Burnley 1
2:32pm Sunday 17th March 2013 in Sport
DAVID Dunn’s 95th-minute equaliser preserved Blackburn Rovers’ 34-year unbeaten record over Burnley as this afternoon’s East Lancashire derby at Ewood Park ended all square.
Jason Shackell’s goal had looked set to give the Clarets their first win over Rovers since 1979, despite the visitors having to end the game with 10 men after Ben Mee was sent off.
But Dunn popped up to level the match in the fifth of six minutes added on at the end of the game.
Shackell had put Burnley ahead in the 32nd minute when he headed Ross Wallace’s free kick against the foot of the post before following up to score.
Wallace then curled a 25-yard free kick against the outside of the post as the Clarets had the better of the first half against a poor Rovers side.
Rovers improved safter the interval, with Jordan Rhodes firing over after turning Shackell before Mee was sent off in the 65th minute.
It was the left back’s second yellow card in the space of seven minutes – both for late tackles.
Rovers pushed desperately for an equaliser in the closing stages and it looked like it would not come until the ball found its way to Dunn, who lashed past Grant from 10 yards at the far post.
Rovers: Jake Kean; Todd Kane, Scott Dann, Grant Hanley, Martin Olsson (Nuno Gomes 87); David Dunn, Jason Lowe, David Jones, Cameron Stewart; Leon Best (Josh Morris 46), Jordan Rhodes. Subs not used: Greg Sandomierski, Gael Givet, Karim Rekik, Lee Williamson, Morten Gamst Pedersen.
Clarets: Lee Grant; Kieran Trippier, Michael Duff, Jason Shackell, Ben Mee; Ross Wallace (Danny Lafferty 70), Marvin Bartley, Chris McCann, Alex Kacaniklic; Charlie Austin (Danny Ings 81), Martin Paterson (Sam Vokes 85). Subs not used: Brian Jensen, Kevin Long, Brian Stock, Junior Stanislas.
Referee: Andy D’Urso.
Attendance: 20,735.

Nevertheless, it is only a reprieve for Rovers, hopefully the Claret's faithful can watch the chicken cooper's slide down even further into the obscurity they deserve. Not being able to beat 10 man Burnley cuts through the joy of the draw for Rovers, who were crying until Dunny snatched the equaliser. The abyss of the drop beckons, and with all sincerity, no other club but Rovers deserves to fall into it more!

Burnley can only count themselves as pillocks! They had the opportunity, but once again spurn it. If it were not for the red card on Mee's it would arguably have been the Claret's day.

Rhodes should try harder to hit the targets
Appleton should be sacked he hasn't got a clue a very bad tactition when Burnley lost a man with red card , he should have taken more advantage of attacking football.
Rovers are in serious relegation fight and Appleton has lost the plot .
Shaw shoud take the blame as he appointed Appleton as new manager.
Sack Shaw Agnew Appleton and Shebby wih these clowns in charge Rovers are going down fast and the only way up is a new experience manager .Venkys needs to listen to fans ,the fans were right and BRFC is sinking fast.

Will P says...
There's nothing to shout about though, Burnley are poor, we're poor, we don't seem to be improving and the style of football is a massive restraint on our future success.
If we weren't winning games but attempting to play actual football, I wouldn't mind at all seeming as our season is over. At least we'd be in better shape for next season but it's just not happening.
Problem is that if Appleton is sacked, the choice of the next manager is in the hands of the Venky's/Singh/Shaw which will mean we'll get another unproven coach.
God help if we did a poll with fans, we'd get Souness and play medieval football where skill is a 'fluke'.
If we ever want to be back in the premier league again, we'll need patient fans (never ever going to happen) and a manager who'll be prepared to change the whole style of play.
Di Canio's available. I'd happily have him as manager any day.
I've never been a 'naysayer', I want this club to have a successful future.

Poor dunny must be so embarrased by all of this, He is the only one of the squad that shows any real passion for the cause.
It is sad to say but you fans at the game today should of rushed the pitch in the 2nd half and done a sit down protest which would of got the game called off.
Instead of keep whinging on here us fans should do something about it after all actions speak louder than words.

Do the opposite and support your club! That may be a strange notion to the serial moaners out there but trust me you'll help us progress.
Do yourselves a favour and stop moaning about Appleton, we need a consistent base so let's just survive this season and give him a chance to build his own team! You can't judge him with a kean squad.
And Burnley fans - your bitterness is really showing, you would be better served going away and keeping your nonsensical opinions to yourselves

A poor referee didnt help either team all he got right was the time added on for timewasting and injuries. I will leave the Clarets to dwell on that - Rovers fans have enough of their own worries.
Goal conceded - just like Wednesday no one picked up the big defender and for him to get the rebound after hitting the post is diabolical. Jake Kean is a great shotstopper but for a guy his size balls into the box he should be commandering the area instead of rooted to the line.
Up front - we need a physical presence if only to change the game plan if its not working. Appleton by sendinGDann forward for the last 10 minutes confirmed this. Go out and get a big guy who Rhodes can feed off before the loan window shuts.
Midfield - Dunn offers quality and commitment - this begs the question at Ewood why was he frozen out was he another Nelsen or Salgado. In a battle you need commitment and he shows as does Givet whatever the contract issues. Get him in and get Martin Olssen as winger he can put in a quality ball which we are lacking
Well done to Todd Kane - simple effective fullback - if Rovers are building for the future he is the type you want. I also thought Josh Morris did his bit - Appleton should realise we have been outnumbered in midfield for too long hence we revert to the long high ball
Realistically we are in a battle for survival - effort alone is not enough we dont have an easy run in and other teams are picking up wins - 3 points makes a world of difference - lets go out against Blackpool looking for a win not a draw by not conceeding.
Finally Season Tickets - would the last 3 games at Ewood have encouraged anyone to buy or renew their season ticket - definitely NO.
That with poor fayre in itself will lead to serious financial ramifications for the club. Will Venkys speak or are there still too many skeletons in the Rovers cupboard - I think just maybe there is - Of for a John Williams or Tom Finn to run our club

No doubt, Dunny's goal will have saved the faces of many a Blackburn Rovers supporters wife and girlfriend!
You're 4 points from the drop, you've nothing to celebrate, but much to be anxious about. You needed to win to today, the teams coming at you now won't be as ****-poor as Burnley.

After the Millwall match most folk and myself included slatted Rovers for playing the long ball game, today I thought they did try to play it out from the back more.
Given the amount of injury's we have and what's happened over the last two years I for one think we will just about stop up this season, no more just stop up, going forward Appy has at least tried to sort this mess out and once the almighty clear out happens at the end of the season I am still prepared to give him a chance.
We are at an all time low but looking round when we scored today just gave me hope, well done lads the records in tacked and things will get better in my opinion.

I am speechless at the awful tactics and lack of idea. We have no craft, no direction and no clue. I hate Steve Kean for all the obvious reasons (and don't want him back) but the bitter and hard truth is had he still been here we would never have to suffer the truely woeful football that Rovers serve up under Appleton.
Venkys have had 3 chances to install a proper and experienced manager with real pedigree but once again they have f*cked up good and proper.
Astonishingly we are now in a relegation battle and that is f*cking outrageous.
How much further can we drop until this nightmare is over?

But to be honest he just papered over the cracks, Rovers were abysmal and for long periods made an extremely poor Burnley side look like world beaters, and that took some doing.
I am not absolutely certain but was the first save the Burnley keeper had to make at around 92 minutes?
The second was Dunny's goal.
I still think we have to give Appleton the close season to change things around, but in the mean time I would hope that someone behind the scenes would encourage him to go to page 2 of his football tactics colouring book, because page 1 isn't working.
Mr Appleton, the main idea behind the game of football is to score goals, and we can't defend for toffee.
40 plus passes back to Kean for him to hump it upfield resulted in?.....nothing whatsoever, not one single effort on goal, more often than not it just put Burnley on the front foot.
The players are not comfortable with the tactics, the fans don't like them either.
That said, great atmosphere, both sets of fans played their part in that, something that has been missing from Ewood for so long, and for some weird reason I really enjoyed it.

Looking at your team's recent performances, and your remaining fixtures, you could quite easily get caught up in a relagation fight too. until we are able to put out a settled side that plays together week in and week out we will play like a team of strangers and draft ins.
we have to accept that the season is over. appleton has to grind out a set of results until the end of the season that gets us one point more than the bottom three.
then he can flush out the no-hopers, settle the squad and add an element of creativity mixed with solid defence.
concurrently with this, the board of directors can write a letter of apology to every single current and past season ticket holder for what they have done to our club, issue a statement of intent that they will work with the supporter base to re- estabish the credibility of our club and that - in partnership - we will work together to have a good shot at getting our club back into the premiership next season.
until venkys and their management team recognise these simple facts we are going nowhere fast - other than to oblivion.

You had a cuddly bald clown as manager who stole Fat Sam's job and liked to drink lots of beer before playing in his motor (when he wasn't soiling his pants and telling lies). He got you relegated and then left after taking a few quid off the club. Now residing at a place unknown but without a doubt laughing at your sorry predicament with a can of beer in his hand.
Then you got a cuddly Norwegian as your 9th choice who was also very bald and very very NOT GOOD at managing a football team. Oh dear, and off he went.
Now you've got ANOTHER hairless buffoon in charge.
I see the trend here. Getting managers with no hair and no experience who look increasingly like Nicolay Valuev. It's a noble strategy but I do wonder just how ugly is the next one going to be?
The new manager's chatter is as bad as Steve Kean's - dribbling on earlier today about this amazing result being a "catalyst" and the like. Jesus wept.
Today you scraped a point at home against 10 men in the 98th minute and your best player has got hair as grey as Mark Hughes (who has been your BEST manager of the last decade incidentally - do you FEEL the danger when you hear things like that?)
Yet despite this utter shambles you're all giving it the big one, smug at your salvaged point today, all the time being way below Burnley in the league and fighting - yes FIGHTING relegation. Well at least you should be fighting but I can't exactly see the likes of Colin Kazim Richards and Nuno Gomes giving a toss what happens to your little club.
Still when you're in a relegation battle what you really need is a Scottish alcoholic witch to keep an eye of things. Every club needs a hapless gambling pensioner thief on the books to keep order about the place. Yes, things are looking rosy. Between you lot of deluded fans, Hendry, Dunny, your inexperienced but shiny headed manager and your ace in the pack.....Ladies and Gentlemen I give you....SHEBBY SINGH......you're in just fine fettle.
Conclusion: it must be US that's the mugs.

Did you put another nail in Rovers relegation coffin? No, we're not in a relegation battle, yet. We're in no different a situation than we were before kick-off, Burnley made no difference whatsoever.
Will you beat Rovers next season? No, if you couldn't beat us this year then you never will, irregardless of what division we're in.
Was Appleton a relieved manager? Obviously, his post-match interview reveals as much. However, if it's vitriol you're after I suggest you listen to Dyche's post-match interview. Blaming everyone except his own time-wasting players for not getting the win, the actions of a manager who knows he's under pressure.
Was Dunn two yards offside? No, he wasn't. Dyche said he'd looked at the replay five or six times but the only angle he got to see doesn't show Dunn in an offside position when the ball is played, it shows Dunn moving forward onto the ball after it's been played. It doesn't take a genius to work out that, based on the speed of the pass and the movement of the player, Dunn was onside when the ball is played. The Burnley players didn't seem to think so either, it's just Dyche clutching at straws as it dawns on him that a couple of bad results and Burnley could be exactly where Rovers are now. Nice try though.
Are Rovers on the slope to extinction? I sincerely doubt it. This season may be a write-off but, as I've already mentioned, we're only three points behind Burnley which means we could still finish mid-table. It may be hard for some people to comprehend, based on recent results, but at the same time it's not impossible. Burnley's form and fixture list could just easily see them embroiled in a relegation scrap.
Will Burnley miss Rovers? Of course they would! Every year apart is potentially another year they have to go without beating us. You can tell by their continued presence on the Rovers pages that their season has been defined by what we've done. Unlike them I don't care about finishing above our nearest rivals. Aside from money, which we still have a lot more of, there's no real difference in finishing 7th or 21st, you've not won anything either way. The bragging rights come from the derby games themselves and, although both games were draws, Rovers still have them based on the fact that Burnley can't even win against such poor opposition.

Dunny, local lad who plays for the club he loves and supports&would never have left for Birmingham apart from Souness versus Payton. Wife beating , ale-can who smelt the money & fu.cked off at the 1st opportunity, only to return as an even fatter slower waste of space.
Jack Walker, we all know what his commitment, loyalty & cash did , versus Kilby, ten bob millionaire, lining his own pocket & denying any chance of proper success cos he was too interested in his own bank balance.
No wonder you b@stards are so bitter. We might be a shambles at the moment, but at least our generation (I'm 47) have got the memories, you've got nowt and you still have that millstone hanging around your neck.

Good Derby.
Down side is how can these 2 clubs play each other ever without a massive Police presence. Not going to happen. Future games may be played behind closed-doors (u heard it here first, my opinion only).
The behaviour of the Burnley fans will only encourage this outcome. Their smashing of the Concourse facilities etc and their use of their buses as toilets.... yes... as bad as that!

It's been an miserable few years and I understand that some fans are still seething because of our relegation. However, what's done is done. You can't keep calling for a change in manager if they fail to deliver instant success. The football hasn't been great since the Arsenal game but I'm sure that losing players left, right and centre hasn't exactly helped matters. After all, when Appleton first arrived we were playing some decent football so he's obviously capable of something other than the long-ball game, as the second-half of Sunday's game proved.
