BLACKBURN Rovers have confirmed this afternoon that they have decided not to nominate their ladies team for a place in the FA Women’s Super League next year.

The league is expanding to two divisions next year and bids are being accepted until Monday, with up to 20 clubs due to be awarded a licence.

Rovers Ladies played in the FA Women’s Premier League between 2006 and 2011, but opted not to bid to join the Super League when it was introduced two years ago.

Rules required the ladies club to become a separate legal entity, rather than an fully integrated part of Blackburn Rovers, and it was felt that there were too many logistical hurdles to overcome to make a bid at the time.

And the club have now confirmed that, after discussions this week, they have decided they again will not be bidding to join the expanded Super League.

A statement said: “Blackburn Rovers can confirm they have decided not to apply to join the FA Women’s Super League, which is set to introduce a second tier next season.

“The decision has been made solely on the complex intricacies of the new league structure.

“The club remain totally committed to the girls and ladies section, which has been an integral part of the club for the last two decades.”
