NELSON boss Mark Fell is determined to see his Admirals make a North West Counties League First Division charge between now and the end of the season – and says many more displays like last weekend’s can only help their cause.

Fell’s men were edged out 3-2 by high-flying Formby – a side who are currently fourth but with five games in hand on the leaders – but he was delighted with the effort and display of his side and says it augurs well for the future.

“Formby are a good side and I don’t feel that we deserved to get beat,” he said. “But a display like that can only give you confidence and belief for the future.”

Fell, right, who took over at Victoria Park in the autumn after the sacking of Michael Morrison and Rob Grimes, was further cheered when his men turned their display into points on Monday night as they beat Oldham Boro 2-1 thanks to goals from defender Iain Robinson and striker Ash Higgins to climb into 10th place.

And after that win on the road, the manager is looking forward to returning home high on confidence this weekend.

“I was delighted with the three points on Monday,” he added. “The lads worked really, really hard and responded in the right way.

“We were magnificent from the first minute to the last. We went in 1-0 up and it could have been three or four – but we had to hold out at the end to claim the win.

“But we will have to hold at times in this league, we have to be resolute and work hard for everything that we get and that’s what we did.

“Oldham caught us out with a free kick for their goal and that is something that we will have to work on because we have been caught out a few times this season but we will work on it and we will get that right.

“We have Irlam at home this weekend and if we can beat them it sets us up nicely to build a platform to move on and get some good results between now and the end of the season.”
