Appleton wants quick reaction to Blackburn Rovers' defeat at Hull

MICHAEL Appleton has called for a big reaction from his Blackburn Rovers side on Saturday after admitting he will learn more about his squad in the next few days.
Rovers’ six-match unbeaten streak was brought to an abrupt halt in Tuesday night’s 2-0 defeat at Hull City, leaving them losing ground in their late chase for a Championship play-off spot.
Leeds United are the visitors to Ewood Park on Saturday, followed by a tough trip to Leicester, as Appleton assesses how his players react to disappointment.
He said: “It is easy when you are winning and everything is going your way. You learn more about yourself, the players, the staff and even your fans when you have a defeat and things don’t go right.
“Ultimately we were second best against Hull and that is why we lost the game. The onus is on us to go against Leeds on Saturday and go right at them. It is important we bounce back from that disappointment and I'm sure the players will be trying to do that.
“It is a good game to bounce back in against a Leeds side who are always well travelled in terms of support, so I’m sure the atmosphere will be good. Hopefully we can be on the right end of a result.
“These midweek games you do get strange results and I think that will continue. You have to be at your highest concentration to stop that happening.
“Hull over the period of the season from a consistency point of view have been very, very good. They have won a lot of tight games and that is why they are where they are.”
Eyebrows were raised at Appleton playing Manchester City loanee Karim Rekik out of position on the left wing, but the Rovers boss insists he felt the Dutchman did well.
He said: “We knew they would get a lot of crosses into the box and that is why we shaped up as we did with Williamson one said and Karim the other.
“Karim played a little higher up the pitch than he is normally used to. I thought for the first half he did it ever so well, he stopped the supply to Elmohamady. Circumstances were why we brought him off.
“We nullified that as best as we possibly could for the first 45 minutes but the first goal changed the game.
“We did not deal with the disappointment of conceding the first goal. We should have stuck in there, made the game harder than it was after that.
“You can nit pick and we will but ultimately if you allow balls into your box as we did for the last half an hour, then you are going to concede at some point.
“We got done at the far stick and that is really disappointing because we spent an hour on Monday dealing with balls going to the far stick because we knew that was what their strength was.
“There are a lot of games, there will be a few ups and downs between now and the end of the season.”

However on Saturday changes are needed to give us more pace on the wings, give Nunes a run, from what we have seen so far not every cross has been great but he does have pace and will run at the man something we have lost in letting Rochina go.
Desperately need 3 points on Saturday so lets go a bit more attacking and gain a much needed win.

The main thing is the team are heading in the right direction, MA doesnt try to feed us any nonesense and we havnt heard any negative about the team in the national press for what feels like a lifetime.
On a different note, did anyone see MA's interview on Football Focus. I loved the cheeky smile he had when the reporter asked him about Crazy Uncle Shebby. You could see him holding back the laughter and just said that he hadnt met him and Shebby has his number if he wishes to call. Thank God that nutter has stayed away.

We need time to build a squad that can stand the test of this league before thinking about the premiership. If Venky's can back Appleton this summer and let him build a stronger and more balanced squad, it will serve us better in the future. We can't go marching into the premiership with the squad we have now, plus a few summer signings. A successful squad takes at least a few seasons to form. Give him time.

But the worst 'player' on the pitch - worse even than Murphy - is Marcus Olsson. A nowt of a player. You can squish him without breaking sweat. And yet some fans rate him! Once every 6 weeks he might shoot or flash a cross into the box.

Everyone has a favourite player. Mine is and always will be in this team our own Peders Blue and White to the blood. Sad to see his form slipping in his later years but one cannot forget that he is one of Rovers greats, but that doesn't mean everyone will agree with me. And that is a-ok with me.
Rochina has pace, skill and flair but he is far from a team player which is his biggest let down. He was desperate to get on the score sheet , so much so that he put himself before the team and made costly gaffs.

if you cant give to your own player, toe it into touch or corner, or pass into space where there are no attackers , where a defender can get it, or get it far out as the half way line so the defence can push out.

last time rovers had to stay in this division for the second year, they tried to buy the best players of this division and players wanted to prove themselves, they had to invest heavily
this year rhodes is the only investment that has worked out, what should they do, buy the better players of this division or look to players that are established with premiership experience, or bring young players that are in the premier league and are hungry looking for a chance to shine

He still has that magic touch when taking free kicks and I will
always love him for what he has done and put up with during his
time with our beloved club..
He is also helping some of the young players who are with the club.

Cant believe appleton doesnt use nuno gomes, palace have picked up their results with bringing on a player nearing his fourties, kevin phillips add so much to their team with his quality, even as a substitute or start him so rhodes can take a break and sometime start second half, he has the touches, vision and can spot a pass, take a look at his link up play.

A potted history…….
An FA coaching guru called Charles Hughes, author of the Official FA Guide to Basic Team Coaching, first coined the phrase POMO. From his collation of statistics Mr Hughes concluded most goals were scored from less than three passes. So it was important to get the ball forward as soon as possible. He emphasized the importance of particular areas of the field from where goals were most often scored (or POMOs), the “far stick” being one such area (the main one, in fact), concluding players would score if the ball was played into these areas enough times. He stressed the importance of set plays and crosses into the box (that’s the penalty area, by the way).
Many British coaches became so obsessed with launching the ball in the general direction of the opponents goal, they disregarded where the player doing the launching was on the pitch at the time.
Sound familiar?
Hughes’ philosophy has been derided for encouraging a generation of players with neither basic technical skills nor tactical nowse - more commonly known as English players.
It could therefore be considered the objective of what is often described as the long ball game - i.e. hoofing it up field whenever possible (in case you thought "long ball game" is another name for rugby).
Essentially then, "stick" means post (as in the goalframe, not letters, parcels etc.). A ball, or pass, to the "far stick" is therefore a cross in the general direction of the post furthest away from the point of contact when making said cross; as opposed to a cross to the "front stick" which is one to the nearer of the two posts.
Watch a game of football; you'll soon get the hang of it.

I just dont like people ( mainly one with dozens of bogus accounts) coming on here to generate negative vibes at any excuse which is how I see MOH . Remember all the posts about Kalanic...this greatest player we ever let gag is wearing thin. If a player is good enough it usually shows, Duffer, Mattie J, Roque etc. There plenty like RR and Junior that showboat but essentially weaken the team.
The next phase for the Naysayer accounts will be OK we are winning but the football under Appy is not entertaining enough...Sound familiar?
