Murphy: Accrington Stanley can't fret about league table

PETER Murphy says Accrington Stanley must not look at the league table and instead focus on getting the results they need to get out of trouble - after the Reds slipped into the relegation zone last night.

Victory for Aldershot meant Stanley dropped into the bottom two for the first time, with only AFC Wimbledon now below them in the League Two table.

The Reds have won just one of their last 16 matches after Friday’s 2-0 loss at Exeter and Murphy admits there is concern about the club’s recent results.

But the 22-year-old still thinks one victory could transform the mood around the club, with Stanley hosting Cheltenham on Saturday.

And he says the squad must avoid getting too down about their current league position.

“One win would put everyone in a better mood straght away and there’s no reason why it can’t come on Saturday,” Murphy said.

“As much as you do look at the table and you’re worried that you are down there, you can’t do that.

“You’ve just got to look at winning the games to get yourselves out of it.

“There’s only us that can do that.

“Everyone looks at league tables but there are still a load of games to go.

“We’ve got that little mini league (at the bottom of the table) and we have to make sure we’re top of that.

“We have just got to keep doing the right things that the manager is telling us. Against Exeter we played okay, it’s just everything is going against us at the minute. The little mistakes we keep making we keep getting punished for.”

Stanley midfielder Bohan Dixon has joined Marine on a month’s loan.
