Blackburn Rovers star Rhodes in seventh heaven

First published in Sport Lancashire Telegraph: Photograph of the Author by , Blackburn Rovers reporter

JORDAN Rhodes was in seventh heaven on Saturday after claiming a priceless winner to make him just the fourth player ever to score in seven consecutive league games for Blackburn Rovers.

The Rovers striker was adamant the second half winner against Ipswich was his, despite some crediting it as a Stephen Henderson own goal, as Michael Appleton’s men moved to within just four points of the play-offs.

Replays were inconclusive but, with no dubious goals panel for the Championship and Rovers ready to award him the strike, Rhodes can now set his sights on a record breaking eight on the bounce at Brighton tomorrow night.

Rhodes joins Jack Southworth, Eddie Quigley and Ted Harper in scoring in seven straight games and the 23-year-old, who broke his nose earlier in the game, admits it is a huge honour.

Meanwhile Rovers boss Michael Appleton is hopeful of adding another loan signing in time for the trip to Brighton, with David Bentley understood to be on his wanted list.

Match-winner Rhodes said: “It is a real honour. I was looking at the paper on Friday and I didn’t really know what the record was for the club, to be considered with the names of some strikers at the club, there have been many great ones, is a real honour.

“I feel very privileged to be mentioned amongst them but it doesn’t matter who scored the goals it was about the three points.

“I will try and not let it change my mentality. I will keep on as normal. It will be nice to look on when I am retired though.

“It is my goal. I know you will say that is the way strikers are but, it was. Aaron Cresswell made a good clearance off the line and I didn’t know much about it but I knew I made good contact and I have diverted the ball in the direction it was coming from.

“I made good contact and didn’t see much of it from then because it went through a body or two and maybe took a touch off the keeper but I definitely made good contact and it is mine.

“It would be nice to beat the record but at Brighton it doesn’t matter who scores the goals. What matters is picking up the three points if we can get them.”

Of his nose injury, which was picked up after an accidental first half clash, Rhodes added: “The nose is sore.

“If you had asked me after a 1-0 defeat, I would have said it was agony but after a 1-0 win and you have got the winner it feels a lot, lot better.”

Rhodes has now scored three goals in the last two games to help Rovers climb up to eighth, and he insists it is all about results at this stage of the season.

He said: “It might not be pretty at times but it is a matter of grinding out results. Earlier in the season we might have played better than that but lost by two or three. It is important we stuck in and got the win.

“The majority of the games at Huddersfield last season we didn’t play as free flowing as we could have done. You see the games coming up and they are thick and fast. You are not going to be able to play your best football but you have to grind out the results.

“We will just do the best we can and come May 4 we will see where we are.”

If we can bring in the likes of Bentley and a good centre half, promotion or rather the playoffs is a real possibility. We seem to have sorted out the defence (well at least against the weaker teams we have been solid here), we now really need somebody who can play a killer ball like Bentley.

Rhodes has been our most consistant player this season. The lad has bags of confidence and scores at will. The real positive for us is that we do have the likes of DJ campbell and Leon Best to make their mark. DJs record in the championship speaks for itself, he too has the ability to find the net. I think this will help to take any unecessary pressure of Rhodes and allows us to rest him. The last thing we need is this lad burning out.

If we were to get Bentley then don't hope for the lad who left us for Spurs all those years ago. I do hope that he is successful with us but sInce his fall from grace his form has sufferred. I hope that the familiar surroundings of Ewood Park will push him into getting to or even close to his form on his last spell. I think he can make the difference for us, just depends which Bentley decides to play.

I agree with the Dunny comment. If he's fit, he runs the show. The 2 games he played in, back-to-back under Eric Black were two of our best performances, and 2 wins. If you could put Dunny's head on Rochina's body you'd have a perfect attacking midfielder. Might look a bit weird though.

Murphy actually had a half decent game on Saturday. He is currently trying to run the midfield at the moment as Lowe is not a central midfielder and Pederson again was a passenger who just turns and hoofs the ball. Things are looking up slowly, yes the performances aren't great but certain players are improving and Hanley is another whom has come on a great deal under Appleton and the defence is starting to lok more solid.

I'm sorry but Murphy was horrendous as usual. The amount of times he either:

a) gave the ball away
b) over committed on a challenge - only to completely miss and allow them to attack
c) did an awful pass which was intercepted
d) didn't mark the player stood 2 metres away from him
e) wandered to the wings to stand and watch, leaving Lowe to mark two players in the centre
f) Having a go at various Rovers players, when he himself was at fault

Murphy had an awful game as usual, he looks back far too often. Granted some of the time its because our forward players aren't open or making space. Pedersen and Lowe in the centre would be a much better pairing.

An for those of you having a do at Pedersen, he's a LW'er playing RW. Name one player this season whose done a better job on the RW than Pedersen?

Quality of football until we scored was as bad as I have ever seen anywhere. Hoof ball pure and simple. Murphy clearly our best player in that he was the only one who looked to pass the ball to a team mate rather that hoof it in the air. Better once we scored and DJ clearly made a big difference. I'm just worried what will happen to Nuno Gomes now. The man is quality and a joy to watch. Should be at the very least a regular sub but with DJ arriving and Leon Best nearing fitness looks like we may never see Nuno again.

I agree. A lot of flair players are selfish. Rochina just needed a good manager to show him the right way. He is young and when he got the chance tried to prove himself so that he would get game time and obviously he tried too hard. As for Bentley, I havent seen him play since he was at Spurs so havent a clue what he is like now but Im guessing not that good.

I have to agree Johnny Rover, I saw Nuno Gomes playing in the win at Ashton Gate and thought his class, skill and experience were going to be invaluable this season for the Rovers. He linked up so well with Jordan Rhodes that game too...maybe he needs to be playing at a higher level so we are saving him for the prem? And why not, Ryan Giggs is still doing the biz for manure...!

He linked up so well with Jordan Rhodes that game too...maybe he needs to be playing at a higher level so we are saving him for the prem? And why not, Ryan Giggs is still doing the biz for manure...! Yes FR that was some game. Personally I have not given up hope that Mr A can slim down and get Dunny fit as I think he would be a sensation in this league. He does get a lot of critism on here but if fit would take us very close to promotion. Come on David sort out your pfoblems and get back on the pitch.
You will be lucky, he was on the bench and at last quote he was one week away again. In my opinion he's been the highest paid player that hardly plays Blackburn have ever had.
Vince Grella?
Vince was certainly a fixture on one of the two beds in the physio room, so much so that Dunny couldn't risk coming back from Brum until we had let Stephen Reid go to West Brom. ;-)

Be nice to have Bentley back on the right for us.....will never forget his hat-trick in the 4-3 win against man united - pure class!
Isnt he only one of 2 players to have scored a hattrick against man united or something like that? It was the best feeling ever (makes it even better when its against man u mind!)

Well done Rhodes, without your goals this season we would near the bottom of the league! Rochina our next top goal scorer - says it all !!

COYB !
let,s wait and see what DJ and Leon will do before we start quoting the selfish Rochina He.was not a team player.!!!!!!!!!!
Rochina had the ability to create a piece of magic to turn a game, in my opinion he has been sadly missed in the last two games.
I agree. A lot of flair players are selfish. Rochina just needed a good manager to show him the right way. He is young and when he got the chance tried to prove himself so that he would get game time and obviously he tried too hard. As for Bentley, I havent seen him play since he was at Spurs so havent a clue what he is like now but Im guessing not that good.
he has been playing in Russia for Rostov. Thats why you haven't seen or heard of him!

Bring the boy back David Bentley has unfinished business down at the good ship Ewood - his words of regret on the unseemly departure of he.

Tomorrow were off down to Brighton in a 16 seat minibus following our beloved club adorning the crest.

My dream is to see Bentley running out in the B&W halves(tomorrow would be ideal)

Win, lose or draw chuff the lot of them we are marching on !

Flying high up in the sky we'll keep the blue flag flying high................

I really need to try and curb this obsession with Rhodes that is developing thick and fast! He is a god! I feel sick when I think of where we would be next season if we didn't have him.

Agree, Rochina was definetly missed in the game against Ipswich, a few at Blackburn end at half time felt that way. There was no space and Rochina would have created space by dribbling and taking a few defenders on making space for Rhodes and others.
