UPDATE: Rhodes claims record in Ipswich win

JORDAN Rhodes is claiming the winner in this afternoon's 1-0 win at home to Ipswich to take Rovers to just four points away from the Championship play-offs.

Replays are inconclusive as to whether Rhodes got a touch to the ball before it cannonned off goalkeeper Stephen Henderson for a second half winner - but Rhodes is adamant it is his goal.

Should the strike be credited to the Scot, Rhodes will have equalled a club record of scoring in seven straight league games, with only Jack Southworth, Eddie Quigley and Eddie Harper having done it before.

Rhodes said; "It is definitely my goal. I know I am going to say that but it was. I got a good connection to send it towards goals and maybe it went in off someone."

Rovers and Ipswich cancelled each other out in an uneventful and uninspiring first 45 minutes.

Neither goalkeeper had a shot to save in earnest, as the defences came out on top leaving a quiet Ewood Park very little to cheer about.

The visitors had the better of the chances that were made, with Aaron McLean glancing an Aaron Cresswell cross wide midway through the half.

The second half continued in similar fashion until the introduction of DJ Campbell for his debut on 58 livened things up.

Rovers were ahead a minute later through Rhodes. Danny Murphy's right wing corner dropped to Grant Hanley and, after his shot was blocked on the line, Henderson deflected the ball into the net with Rhodes claiming an initial touch.

Towards the end Campbell had a shot tipped wide by Henderson and Rhodes headed wide, while at the other end N'Daw volleyed inches wide as Rovers continued their winning streak.

Super result for Rovers, grinding it out when teams around us are dropping points. If we can get a win at Brighton and if Leeds can take some points at Boro who have to travel to Hull after that the table could look very different in a few weeks. COYB!!!

Evening Mr French ;-)

Turgid first half bordering on the game being put under investigation for irregularities by the authority's !

The goal just about summed up the game as a whole, but hell, 3 points and the scruffy sops crying into their beer as they fall below the mighty B&W's.

Feeling good at present with the progress although that said would dearly love to see more Arte as time moves on ?

Clean sheets are the foundation that bring success to the good ship Ewood.

Keep on keeping on Mr Appy, and well done the boys(first half apart)

Had a good laugh on't match today lots of smiling faces. A sight to behold, me thinks ;-)

Another three points and another clean sheet, I'm getting used to this and enjoying it. Not the greatest first half but we were well organised and worked hard. MA has taken us back to basics by starting to make us difficult to beat. A team that couldn't buy a clean sheet under Berg, Black and the one before is organised, hard to break down and playing as a defensive unit. Looking forward to savouring that table tonight with us back above those wasteful dingles, throwing away a lead at Bolton then rolling over, my heart bleeds for glenborian and his inbred chums. Be interesting if any of them show up on here tonight to congratulate us as its nearly time for the tags to start buzzing and the curfews to start. Perfect Saturday, Rovers win dingles lose and even sweeter as we leapfrog them in the table.

For the benefit of those of you not at the game today ( the stay away 10,000) please do not be deceived into thinking that this performance was anything near approaching acceptable. The first Hal was dire and Appleton`s team selection has dragged the definition of mediocrity down to New depths. If head tennis were an Olympic event we could be nailed on for gold but we were totally devoid of creativity in midfield and Rhodes, as usual, was left to pick up scraps. With a little more effort in the second half we got the scrappy goal we needed to scab the three points but Ipswich could, and probably should have scored at least twice in the last ten minutes. Nobody will persuade me that this performance or this team is anywhere near as strong as where we were at the end of Steve Kean`s tenure but I am sure that many on here will try. I see that Appleton says he wants three new players next week. He should go out and recall Formica, To China and Vucevij.

So a lot in common with the Bristol Game really, first half was two poor teams playing too much head tennis and struggling to play football. For the first 20minutes we had the chuckle brothers at the heart of defence but once they settled down it was all pretty turgid.Second half improved with some decent chances created for Rhodes who was unlucky with a string of headers and saw a low drive expertly saved. The goal was scruffy, but deserved, but I'm saving my plaudits tonight for CKR who put his heart into a fantastic battling performance, Hanley was solid and got MOTM but for a guy criticized on here as lazy and selfish I thought colin as immense today.

Final thought goes to SRVP who spent last night flying in the face of popular opinion telling us all we were wrong about Bradley Orr, sorry pal we weren't. He is not a championship level defender and was woeful again today. Very nearly cost us 2 points getting turned onto his ar5e by a championship winger. Nuff said.

So not a day to be negative, natural order of things restored in East Lancashire, my glass is half full,

Time for you to go back to the golf course for a round of that middle class pastime played by working class wanna-be's. You must have seen a different game to me. 1st half dross but last 25 mins were excellent. Did you miss the 3 chances that Rhodes would have put away on another day? Angry, I think you and I watched the same game today and agree on many things, such as its still not good enough for the Prem.. Where we differ is that for all the faults that remain there are now signs of improvement. Frankly under Kean there was nothing more than further decline. Early doors we got a lucky break, we were scraping a few wins from teams who, had they shown us less respect, would have properly nailed us, and we would by now be looking at relegation. We have fallen so far it will take some turning around but I believe the decline has, for now, been halted.

No I was not there .

1 - Was it an own goal or chalk one
up for Rhodes ?

2 - If Colin KR was fouled six times
and then gets a yellow for one foul ,
was that fair ?

3 - My wife and I disagree on one thing . I would welcome other peoples'
opinions !!

My opinion - we won , Nothing else matters .

Wife's opinion - she would rather watch a good match and lose than
watch a poor match and win .

I daren't say to her "well what do chicks know about footy?" as I have no desire to sleep in the spare room tonight . Any suggestions ?

Wrong again. Orr lost his man once, possibly twice, as did every other player on the park today. A Championship defender getting skinned by a Championship winger isn't anything for you to be crowing about. Premiership defenders get skinned by Premiership wingers all the time, it doesn't make them bad players at their respective levels, it's a law of averages that it's going to happen. I notice that you fail to mention the tackles that he made, particularly the match saving block near the end that saved us two points. Enough said.

I think for the size of the guy he is not commanding enough he gets beat quite a lot in the air and his distribution is shocking in my opinion these days a good center half should able to play a pass just as good as win a tackle not just hoof the ball long...like I say it's not a dig its just my honest opinion never the less great win today coyb

It isn't pretty at the moment but Appleton is having to start again almost from scratch. At least he's got the players showing a bit of fight and organisation, but I think it will take another couple of transfer windows, and backing from Venkys, before he can turn us into a ' footballing team. '

The fact that MA wants 4 more signings shows he believes there is still room for improvement so get off his back and let him do the job - compared to the early part of the season the atmosphere is much improved and the team needs our encouragement not criticism

After the shambles and disarray of the last couple of years we just might be at the point of turning the corner.
It isn't pretty at the moment but Appleton is having to start again almost from scratch. At least he's got the players showing a bit of fight and organisation, but I think it will take another couple of transfer windows, and backing from Venkys, before he can turn us into a ' footballing team. '
We're not suddenly going to turn into Barcelona overnight.
COYB.
I do hope that's the case and given his background and managers he's played under you wouldn't expect him to be a percentage merchant.
We heard the ' progression' argument when we had SA and that never happened, but I'm very much on his side.
Crowd is gaining in confidence, and numbers, albeit slowly, so lets see if he can find a few more loaners to add that bit of composure and guile.
Good do.

It's nice to have a Dingle-free debate - although I dare say they'll be on here after they've exhausted their Special Brew, and sisters - but I do feel slightly disappointed that quite a few of our own fans have flooded their page with their goading. I can understand that some people just want to give them a taste of their own medicine but, personally, I don't see finishing above Burnley as an achievement, it's more of a bonus. We've not achieved anything either, yet, so should we be lowering ourselves to their level?

Nuff said. So not a day to be negative, natural order of things restored in East Lancashire, my glass is half full, COYB
I was in the Blackburn End and thought Orr did as well as any other in defence. he took a few close shots in the body and stopped some crosses. I thought once MGP went off and CKR went out wide he wasnt effective and towards the end wasted too much time winding the clock down when they should have been going for another goal. There was about 10 minutes to go and he was trying to hold the ball up in the corner. It was a pretty dire game and as Ipswich were very organised the two teams cancelled each other out but all we want at this stage is pts, some stability and a better atmosphere which it was. Rhodes is becoming a favourite. He just has a confident competent air about him and I love the way he celebrates with the fans and today encouraged the Blackburn End on. Not had that for a while. When was the last time we won 3 on the bounce?

I think that some of that is coincidence. The change not only began when Appleton became manager but when Shagnew had been to India to tell over Shebby who was consequently shoved off the scene and instructed to keep his trap shut. Berg had tough local derbies and also had Shebby breathing down his neck, down at training everyday, giving his ridiculous interviews and provoking concern about Judan Ali being appointed as coach. How was he supposed to work with that circus. Appleton appears to be left alone now that Shebby is out of the way. It's early days yet.

Question 1 - From where I was sat it was Rhodes goal, may have touched the
keeper on the way in, but it still came off Jordan.

Question 2 - Colin got booked for being a mouthy git.

And I agree with you on the third point, I would rather have the 3 points no matter how bad we play to get them, we learn off our mistakes.
And yes Chicks do know about football, I have been a season ticket holder for years and yes I do understand the off side rule and if you dont believe me you can ask Sian Massey.....

Rubbish first half, much better in the second especially after Campbell came on and KR dropped back a little, gave us more shape and bite in midfield.

Rhodes could have had 4 in the second half with an ounce of luck but I will take the win gladly.

Only criticism of "Appy" is the lack of subs again, Olsen and a couple of others were running on empty for the last 10 mins or so, fresh legs might have helped.

But a good result and they all count.

I reckon we would have probably lost this match two months ago, so we have turned a big corner already. Well done the manager for getting us back into some sort of shape very quickly and for making the season one where we definitely have something to aim for and play for.

The downturn can wait a little longer my friend, as for now, after much ado, the taste of winning, organization, taking the ball in the face(Orr, he owes us that one mate) tastes sweet as a nut, and I'm having some of that.

Many a false dawn we have witnessed, but the players can only take good heart from the last 3 or so.

Good to see Murphy improving and making important tackles and blocks and also Olson twins have been playing a lot better recently. The right side Orr and Pederson needs to be looked at.

A little too early to start crowing, but it is looking much better than it did before Appleton came. We have to play all those teams above us away from home, except Crystal Palace. The only teams above us who we have beaten so far are Hull and Leicester, but five of the top six all appear to be wavering now, with only Cardiff being consistent. If we can keep this momentum going, we can end up with big smiles on our faces, after a day out at Wembley Stadium in May.

Let's not get too excited, there's not a lot of quality around. The Championship for me is poor and our level of performance belongs there (the first half bore witness to that).
MA has a lot of work to do, fortunately he seems to know that and I'm confident there are better times ahead. The team is organised and the team now plays with a passion again, they may not be brilliant but if they give 100% every time they pull on a Rovers shirt, that's fine by me.
My MOM was CKR who's 1st touch was excellent at times and the highlights were the 2 headed efforts by Rhodes from 2 brilliant deliveries by Murphy.

We all know how things can change in one game;injury, ref decision, form, off day. It's a tight league and that first half particularly was sleep inducing. Thing is I've a player I enjoy watching again in Rhodes. He's with the fans, loved how he roused the Blackburn end after his goal. It's the type of passion we used to see in jansen, savage and salgado. He is self assured and could have had another 3 goals yesterday. Great to hear the crowd seeing the team over the finishing line as we used to. Much more positive atmosphere.

It's a two way street.....if the team supply then then the fans respond. At the moment the fans should have no complaints. The team is producing wins. Something we thought was impossible a few weeks ago. MA may not have been the fans choice but he has shown that he can turn the club round given the chance. As long as those behind the scenes give him full rein to put the house in order. He has steadied the ship. Is putting his stamp on the team and looks like he takes no nonsense from anybody. Even I am thinking of returning to the fold, Venky's or no Venky's. as long as the team continues to show they are playing for the manager then I can see no legitimate reason to stay away. Perhaps the Venky's will put my extra few pounds towards improving the squad and not directly into their very deep pockets.

Maybe an odd game but then I don't know what it's like working for 5 managers in one season, Shebby Singh chipping into training and a crowd of fans baying for somebody's blood.

If it's a two way street why did you stay away? Sounds like you just don't like losing.
Hi Darener, I have never stopped going and never will so I can't agree with any reason you offer for not going. That is how you see it though and I suppose therefore that is your choice. However, I must take issue with you to suggest Venkys have very deep pockets. Rovers would be on deep truoble if Venkys pulled out. Venkys are backing Rovers I would say at thelment more than any owner is backing a championship side. We could harp on about Venkys and the mistakes they have made of which there have been many but it does appear they may be learning at last. Time to support the team and the way we are going you just never know. It's only 4 points now.

Fbw.....have to agree with you reluctantly. The Venky's do seem to have realised that football should be run by football people. If they stay in the background, signing the cheques as and when required, then I suppose they could be tolerated. Since Shebby disappeared things have looked up. Does anybody know who kidnapped him?

Hey up mr Woody ! Hope all is well for you ,Let's hope them who own and the shebby bloke let mr Appleton get on with job of managing .
I think that Dj bloke could be a astute addition to the team (does he spin the old 45s with the name DJ???)
Nobody can expect the manager to win every game and get it alright all the time, There will be games to lose and draw ,but so far he is making all the right noises for me.
So he has my support to do the best for Blackburn rovers.
Has for a return to Ewood park I am going to see what happens with the Venky clowns, But I think I will be getting new season tickets for next season ,as we both really have missed going ,enjoying the crowd and people who we used to sit around, our seats have not been taken up by anybody else.
All the best woody we will chat at some point....I see that Jonny bovril hasstill got a lot to say for himself ha ha !
Kind regards to you mr bovril.....
Hey up B & B. good to hear from you.
The last few games have been great, with laughs, groans, cheers etc all in equal measure. Just as it should be on a football match, and none of it related to the manager, venkys, shebby s. just good old fashioned football banter.
It will be great to have you back on board and maybe we can share an odd away day again?
See you soon fella.
Aye
Cheers Jonny,Great to hear from you,
I get what you say about football banter.....missed.

Ok - my opinion (and it is just that). Not pretty, but lets build from the back. Every successful team does it. Its basics. You start to keep clean sheets and nick a goal when and where you can. Whilst I'm not the biggest fan of our defence, something has changed under Appy (for the better).

From there you go forward, look at the midfield - this is our Achilles heel. Again, I havent been a fan of Murphy's, but he's put in a couple of decent shifts lately (still holds onto the ball too long though - lets the opposition get back into position and is left with no outlet). Oh for a box to box midfielder (a fit Dunny would do).

Up front, we have pure class in JR. Hopefully with Best on the comeback trail and the addition of DJ, the future may just be bright.

im sure the coaching staff will be working on goals from midfield to supplement rhodes goals, spreading out the load can make rovers even more dangerous, delivering the ball with pace at corners being more aggresive when attacking the ball, a younger version of dunn someone who is prepared to attack with the ball bravely, even tho it is very rare, we also need to mix it up with free kicks, go under neath or through the wall if they see an opportunity or a training ground routine, anything to make them free kicks less predictable.

There's talk of a so called football club about 10 miles away, they only have about 12,000 village idiots, needed more so thay have adopted him.

The doctor's told me I need to watch what I eat, so I'm going to Haydock races tomorrow.

Well I think if we are going to make a challenge it will be down to the quality of the 4 players Appleton his eyeing. I would think the spuds would agree to halving us at Bentley's wages and in my opinion that right wing spot is the vital ingredient. We are not making sufficient chances at the moment even though we are winning the opposition can get a last minute equaliser like Brighton did if we only score one goal.We need a fast moving midfielder to complement Murphy and a winger who can deliver a Beckham type cross.
We can get automatic promotion if we win most of our games so lets go for it.COYB
