THE chairman of the Donald Race and Newton East Lancashire Football League believes the competition is on course for an on-schedule finish despite another weekend wipeout of fixtures.

Friday’s heavy snow meant there was a second-successive blank weekend for the league but Mike Bibby says despite current frustration, the league is pretty much on track.

“Yes, it is a pain when games are not played,” said Bibby. “But we are actually better off than last season despite the last couple of weeks.

“We were losing games in November last season whereas this time around we have not done too badly until the last few weeks.

“Enfield are a little bit behind but that is because they play at QEGS and the school naturally want to protect their field.

“And the only other team who could have a problem are Rimmington because of their West Riding Cup run.

“They have to play in that because of their affiliation – but if they get through to the semi-finals they will play at nights under floodlights so it will not hit the Saturdays.”
