FIVE Sandygate Amateur Boxing Club fighters have reached the North West ABA Schoolboy finals.

Brett Windle and Will Smith joined James Kimberley, Connor Shaw and Charlie Smith for a shot at an area title after impressive performances in the ring in the semi finals.

Windle, 14, was up against Sam Coates from Kirkham ABC for a place in the 50kg final.

Straight from the opening bell, he controlled the canvas and the Shutttleworth student won all three runs to reach the final.

Will Smith, also 14 was up next against England International Matthew Rennie from Manx ABC, for a shot at the 57kg crown which was billed as the standout tie of the day – and both boys didn’t disappoint.

After a cagey opening round, Smith caught Rennie with a sweet uppercut and started to edge the scoring.

But the Blessed Trinity pupil saved his best until the third round, scoring with great combinations and countering well to finally getting the judges decision.

Unfortunately, Barnoldswick's Reagan Driver, 13, narrowly lost out to Ryan Thomlinson of Pool of Life ABC in his first championship at 54kg.

Coach Nik Tucker said: “All the boys made a good show of themselves, giving it their all. Brett just out-classed his opponent, but the biggest result was Will beating a quality fighter like Rennie. But all the lads worked hard over the festive period and deserved it, but they are all focused on next week now.”
