Jennings: I want a tilt at Prizefighter
7:48am Monday 28th January 2013 in Sport
By Chris Flanagan, Sports reporter
CHORLEY boxer Michael Jennings says he would be willing to enter Prizefighter in the future as he bids to relaunch his career.
Jennings is still working towards a return to the ring after a lay-off of more than two years, largely due to a shoulder injury.
The 35-year-old has not fought since losing to Kell Brook in September 2010, in a bout that ended after only five rounds because of a cut to Jennings.
Jennings previously held the WBU world welterweight title and challenged Miguel Cotto for the WBO title at Madison Square Garden in New York.
He does not know when he will fight next and was not approached to take part in last week’s welterweight Prizefighter tournament.
The format sees eight boxers contest quarter finals, semi finals and a final – each over three rounds – with a prize of £32,000 for the winner. Several fighters have used the event to relaunch careers, with Audley Harrison being the most notable, and Jennings would like to take part should the opportunity arise.
“I would love to have a go at that,” he said. “It’s not something that I’ve been asked to do but I think I would be suited to it.
“I’ve got good stamina so I think I’d be able to deal with the rounds.
“It is something that does get you back up there as a boxer and it’s something that would interest me.
“I’m still in training at the moment and getting my shoulder right.”
