Celtic eye Austin as the top Bhoy
8:00am Monday 21st January 2013 in Sport
By Suzanne Geldard, Burnley FC reporter
CELTIC are believed to have set their sights on Charlie Austin as a replacement for Premier League target Gary Hooper.
The Scottish Premier League champions are braced for losing their top scorer in the January transfer window, with Norwich City said to be ready to offer £6million for the former Scunthorpe United striker, who turns 25 at the weekend.
The Canaries have already had a £5m bid knocked back by the SPL leaders, who have valued him at £8m.
The pricetag is unlikely to be met. But with the Hoops still resigned to losing Hooper this month, they are in the market for a new striker, and Austin would fit the bill.
Hooper took his tally for the season to 20 goals, in 30 games, with a brace in Celtic’s 4-1 win over Hearts on Saturday.
Austin has an even more impressive strike rate this season, with 23 goals from the 27 games he played before pulling up with a hamstring injury in the early stages of the home defeat to Leicester City last month.
He is set to make his comeback from that in Saturday’s home game against Birmingham City, and Burnley are hoping to have him available for at least the rest of the season.
The Clarets board are adamant they do not need to sell in January and are determined to keep hold of their prized asset beyond the transfer window.
With 18 months left to run on his contract, there has also been talk of a new deal for the striker, with tentative early discussions having already taken place.
As Austin has already attracted interest from a number of Premier League clubs, including Newcastle United and Arsenal, it is debatable how successful those negotiations might be.
But Burnley are at least determined to get through this month with their squad in tact, after climbing to seventh place following Saturday’s impressive 2-0 win at Millwall.
Celtic may not give up easily on Austin, though, who shares a number of similarities with Hooper.
Both started out in non-league before earning their Football League break – Hooper with Grays Athletic, while Austin was prolific for Poole Town.
Hooper moved to Southend and had loan spells at Leyton Orient and Hereford before making a £175,000 move to Scunthorpe in the summer of 2008.
He joined Celtic two years later, and has gone on to score 55 goals in 81 league appearances.
After joining Swindon in the summer of 2009, following a trial with Bournemouth, Austin scored 32 goals in 57 league games, earning him a move to Burnley as Eddie Howe’s first signing at Turf Moor two years ago.
The 23-year-old has 40 goals from 77 league and cup games for the Clarets.

When we signed him we also signed Danny Ings at the same time. Many from the south coast said that Ings was the better buy and from what I've seen of him he looks a good 'en.
Charlie will probably come straight back into the starting eleven once fit, BUT, without him we haven't struggled to score and we're one of the form teams in the league.
When you have a player of Austins class in your ranks, it can make the team a bit one dimensional, take him out and other options are looked at.
Stanislas, Ings and Vokes have already stepped up and got their name on the score sheet so its good with Charlie and arguably as good without him.
Dont forget the dollar we'd get if anybody wants to get the cheque book out either!
NO NAY NEVER

We certainly are better placed to sell him with the quality of cover we have now.
Celtic will have to put money to if they're only getting £6m for Hooper.
I'd love to keep him but we may end up selling in the summer ultimately.

Sort of sums it all up really doesn't it. lol.
Actually even as a Rovers fan, and I have only seen him a couple of times this season I suspect he will do quite well at any level because he has one important quality, time in the box, and that my friends is priceless.

No doubt due to the circus shambles going on there!
Would like to keep Charlie until the end of the season. but like anyone else he will look for the better wage in their field of employment. Burnley should get a pretty packet for him, and the team left is more than capable of continuing the form. Apart from the few goals, Charlie's score tally is down to good service, and Ings has the same predatory instinct. The Clarets will be fine, and if Charlie removes to more lucrative pastures, then we can wish him well and say thanks for all his endeavours.

Mind you, there has to be a collision between two brain cells for someone to form an opinion, that lets most Burnley fans off the hook.

I know times are difficult at Ewood but this is such a long way from being a "major issue"!

They are desperately hoping for Burmley to sell Austin so that they can wheel out their 'bigger club' mantra etc.
Wonder where that chief fool 8 Ball is today? After his brilliant predictions about 'one man team' Burnley and how we were going to get stuffed at Millwall on Saturday.
It is almost cruel to bait him though - like kicking a poorly puppy.

But as a Rovers fan that's my problem, I've just come over here to improve your post percentages, and for a little light relief.
Secondly did I mention your obsession regarding "bigger club?".
Don't think so.
Ah well paranoia wins again.

Way to go with your cunning plan. Letting in a last minute goal in front of fast dwindling crowds is inspired. Don't worry, your secret's safe with us.
