HARRY Newbold-Cozens and Jess Leyden have medalled at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival – one of the biggest sporting events on the planet.

Chorley pupil Newbold-Cozens was a part of the Great Britain team that won gold in men’s syncronised trampolining team event while rower Leyden won a silver medal in the women’s quadruple scull.

The five-day event saw 1,700 athletes from 30 different countries compete across 17 different sports.

And the East Lancashire pair showed that they are up their among the best young sporting talents in the world.

Newbold-Cozens, 14, who attends Albany Academy, finished in fourth place in the individual competition with a score of 145.660 which wasn’t enough to cement a place on podium.

Changxin Liu of China won with a score of 161.995 with New Zealand’s Dylan Schmidt second with 158.715. Another Chinese athlete, Quan Zhou was third with 152.205 points.

But Newbold-Cozens, who lives in Charnock Richard, then teamed up with Joshua Newman who take the synchro title, beating the Australian pairs in to second and third place.

It was also a successful Youth Olympics for Leyden who yet again underline her potential as one of the best young rowers around.

The Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School pupil was part of the Great Britain quadruple skull team that won silver after finishing in second place behind the host nation’s foursome.

Leyden, who is a member of Hollingworth Lake Rowing Club, Emily Ford, Maxie Scheske and Lucy Cruxton pushed the Australia crew all the way before crossing the line in 6mins 55.99secs, just over a second behind the Australian crew from New South Wales.

The GB team split the Australian boats as they finished more than two seconds ahead of the South Australia crew in third place.

Leyden and her team-mates had finished in second place in their qualifying heat to the South Australia team but beat them when it mattered most in the final.
