Blackburn Rovers boss Appleton has Premier ambition

MICHAEL Appleton insists the Premier League is still “reachable” for Blackburn Rovers this season – but admits he has ‘put his neck on the line’ by taking up the Ewood Park challenge.

Ahead of tomorrow’s visit of Charlton Athletic, Rovers’ new boss has revealed he has already set his players a ‘win target’ to cement a Championship play-off spot, having admitted automatic promotion is now beyond them.

Appleton, who quit as Blackpool boss after just two months, was quick to insist owners Venky’s had promised him “full control” of the football side of the club and that he was expecting to add ‘two or three’ signings before the end of the transfer window.

The 37-year-old, who appointed goalkeeping coach John Keeley from Portsmouth yesterday, also warned West Ham United they would need to up their valuation of Martin Olsson after revealing their latest bid, in the region of £4million, had been rejected.

Appleton also took the opportunity to rubbish links between him and sports agency SEM – insisting he had never met Jerome Anderson and does not have an agent – as the absence of global advisor Shebby Singh from yesterday’s unveiling raised further questions about Singh’s future.

Rovers entertain Charlton tomorrow seven points off the Championship top six but, with a run of home games ahead, Appleton believes reaching the play-offs is still possible “The board are very, very ambitious,” he said. “They want Premier League football which I totally understand. This has been a Premier League club for a long time. We have got 20 games left, we are not a million miles away from the play-offs. It is certainly reachable.

“We know the amount of games we need to win in the remaining 20 to give ourselves an opportunity to do that, I won’t be making that public. That is our focus at the minute. If we are around it with five or six games to go. We are in the hat to then push on. I had a conversation with the owners and knew how ambitious they were.

“There is a demand they do want to get back up to the Premier League and I have never shirked a challenge.

“The challenges I have faced at the clubs I have been at so far have been of the highest order and it doesn’t get any different.

“When you look at the tally of points teams have got going straight up over the previous years, around the 85 to 90 mark, that’s obviously beyond us now.

“From a realistic point of view, if we can get to the play-offs then it would be a fantastic achievement.

“The remit is obviously Premier League football. I’ve signed a two-and-a-half-year deal and if we can do it in the first 20 games and get into the play-offs then fantastic.

“Every job is a risk, but you take calculated risks as a manager and you’ve got to be brave enough to take on challenges and this is a big challenge, I’m aware of that.

“I’m putting my neck on the line to take the job.

“If I do it, there will be a lot of people very, very happy.”

Appleton, who insists his decision to quit Bloomfield Road for Rovers was a ‘football’ one, insists he has no qualms about working with controversial owners Venky’s.

“As an outsider looking in before I came in, there were a lot of things said about the circus that revolves around Blackburn,” he said.

“After the conversations I had with the owners and how ambitious they were, the thing that stood out to me more than anything was that this was the right place for me and they needed someone to captain the ship.

“Being given full control of the football side is important.

“If I want to sign a player or if I think someone is surplus to requirements, if I feel I need to add a member of staff, I am in a position to do that.

“I felt that was important.

“In doing that, as long as they are prepared to back that which they say 100 per cent they are, we are going to give ourselves a 10 times better opportunity to get back to the Premier League.

“The understanding I have with the owners and the agreement I had when I took the job was that from a recruitment point of view and anything that was involved with football, I would pretty much have full control of that.

“Myself and Shebby, we will work together in terms of players coming in, players going out, the right balance.

“There is still a window of opportunity to make sure we get two or three faces in.”

Appleton also revealed that he had been keen for Gary Bowyer to remain with the first-team coaching set-up, but said that Rovers’ recent caretaker boss has decided to return to his job working with the reserves and youth players.

Bowyer won three of his four games in temporary charge.

If Optimism won promotion for Rovers Managers we would be "out of sight" by now.

Venkys must come over well face to face with people - why dont they do the same for the fans - all we get are broken dreams and promises

Lets hope Christmas 2012 was when things started to turn the right way for Rovers and we can throw the anti depressants away

"Myself and Shebby, we will work together in terms of players coming in, players going out, the right balance" was hoping the chicken farmers had got rid of the lunatic malaysian tv pundit. While the mad one is still at ewood do not think you will have total football control no matter what they tell you Mr Appleton. Venkys tell lies but he is new in the job hopefully he will soon learn not to trust them.

A realistic view of the Rovers situation from MA. Eyes wide open, knows his mind and not afraid to tell it as it is. I am surprised that Venkys went for him actually as they are have never seemed keen on any straight talking people previously.

Nice comment in the South Coast Daily Echo from Appleton about the Venky lot:

"Ultimately we are a football club not a movie production," he said.
"In the past maybe it has been too media orientated and people have had too much to say."

Nice understatement and spot on MA!

I think you'll find that Appleton will name his targets and Singh will be responsible for pursuing those players. Nothing unusual about that, it's standard practice. Also, Appleton is already a millionaire. He won £1.5M in damages from the surgeon who effectively ended his career.

Let's have a more positive look at the Venky years, eh? It's not all bad, you know.
- We escaped relegation once.
- When we were relegated, we weren't actually bottom.
- We won at Old Trafford.
- We still play at Ewood Park, not the Headscratchin' Good VFC Stadium.
- We still play in blue and white, unlike the red-shirted Bluebirds.
- We've got the Clayton and Douglas stands.
- Kean's gone.
- Petrovic's gone.
- Burnley haven't beaten us.
- We've done the double over Barnsley.
- The catering prices are still only ridiculous.
- There's plenty of legroom at matches.
- We're unbeaten in 2013.
- We're still in the FA Cup.
- We've even got a positive goal difference.
- David Dunn's still here. Isn't he?
- The Constant Moaners are very happy.
- 'Blackburn Rovers boss Appleton has Premier ambition'.
See? It's practically a Golden Age!
I'll stop now, nurse, and have a little sleep.

At least MA is not predicting Champions League places, Pep as his assistant, and the arrival of Christian Ronaldo / Falcao this transfer window.

Aiming for the playoffs is about the only thing Blackburn Rovers have left at the moment to be honest. I don't see the FA Cup being a more important target. Wonder who Rovers will sell / buy this window though. Not much juicy gossip going around at the moment...

You are right that Burnley will never achieve what Rovers have done in recent years - I can say with utmost certainty that we will never be able to say we are the first (and only) Champions of the Premier League to be relegated not once but twice. Indeed I would go as far to say that Rovers are probably the only winners of the Premiership that will ever be relegated. How far is that for a fall from grace?
.
As for getting back to the Premiership why do you think you stand a better chance than the bigger clubs in the division like Cardiff, Forest, Leeds, Middlesborough, Brighton, Hull, etc. Remember bigger isn't about history, its about today and the finances and attendances of all these clubs are bigger than Rovers.

Should Burnley end the season placed above Blackburn, well, good for you guys... That doesn't mean you won the Champions League or qualified automatically for the EPL. So... what ARE you going to celebrate then? Burnley confirmed as a mid-table Championship team? Wow!

Fair enough Midas.. We do live in the real world and know where we are now, unlike some of your fellow Burnley fans who are living in a fantasy world thinking thinking they've been supporting the top club in the land.
Face it, we'll probably never win the title again, we're a small town team, just like Burnley but with more potential.

Rovers fans are the first to admit that we have dropped a long way since venkys took over. But burnley will never achieve what what we have in recent years and they will never be as big a club as we have been, and will be again. burnley had one season in the premier league..one season..because they are to small a club to have hacked it with the big boys, not only did we hack it, but we won it, you will never do that EVER!!!!
You bought your way to the premier league, we got there on merit playing quality football.

You then spent £100 million only to be relegated twice, in the process becoming the laughing stock of English football, and now here you are sitting BELOW the Clarets in the Championship with only 20 games to go.

Wind your neck in.
Oh so bitter and desperate.......Yep, we bought it. Just like the others who have the honour of having their name engraved on the trophy with us, FOREVER.
Did any of those clubs get relegated? Twice? Are they ever likely to? You can't keep living in the past, we can all do that, European Cup quarter finals 1961 for example, have Rovers ever reached those heights?

Some of you need to accept that your premier league hard-on has now wilted, yes you get the odd twitcher now and again, i.e. Peterborough, and there were a few thousand excited semi's after going a goal up at the Turf, but the reality is your premier league stonker has now gone floppy and no amount of pulling and squeezing is going to bring it back.

Blackburn DID NOT buy the premier league! The premier league is not for sale! We bought the players that made us good enough to win the premier league, just like all the other teams that have won it. When utd, arsenal, chelsea, city pay 30-40 million for a player, or if burnley pay a million for a player, are they not trying to buy success? Players are bought by clubs to give them a better team, and hopefully win things!!!!

Don't dress it up, you bought it. Not all clubs have had a wealthy benefactor with more money than sense to throw at their club. Jealous? I was in 1995, but not now.

What you mean is we were better resourced than you ever could dream of and even at our lowest, are still classed as a premership team with premier class facilities.

Appleton, when talking about the Venky's, is unable to tell the difference between ambition and fantasy. He must be a simpleton, although not so simple that he has not overlooked an opportunity to pocket a lucrative new contract.
I see note that amongst all the blah, blah, claptrap that we have heard before from Kean, Berg, and The Global Adviser, when it came to the opportunity to declare what the points target was to be for the next 20 matches Appleton ducked it with the statement that it "was not to be made public". Best to not have something against which his performance can be measured; best to stick to the vague blah, blah, blah.
If Appleton is thinking of bringing Bradley Orr back then he must feel the need of a sycophant in defence (in defence of the manager that is.)

They must be as stupid as Venky's. Southampton have just been promoted from League One, to the PL in successive seasons. What do they expect? Champions League qualification? They have also just got four points from two away games, having come back from 2-0 down at Chelsea. IDIOTS!

I tell you what, I'd swap Adkins for Appleton, any day of the week. From over 400 games, he has a win ratio of over 50%

BIT OF ADVICE for the new manager M. Appleton and the P/R company the Venky`s have hired to make the great name of Blackburn Rovers synonomous with Indian chicken !
M.A when you are doing a press conference it would be better for you and everyone if you never mentioned the name of Shebby Singh , you will only find hostility from Rovers supporters when that name is mentioned , better to act as if the man does not exist , and we will all be able to live together better , that goes for M.A. and I would have thought any P.R company with their fingers on the pulse would be well aware of that fact by now.

Until then the fans going to Ewood should refrain from causing the team to have any reason to not perform well. Get behind them, cheer them to victory, show them that the fans of Blackburn Rovers can be the best in the world. If it all goes pear shaped then give the Venky's HELL! At he end of the game. But by then they will probably be on a flight back to warmer climes.
