Nelson boss Mark Fell believes he now has a squad in place that has the quality required to move the Admirals up the North West Counties League First Division table.

The former Whinney Hill manager, who replaced the sacked duo of Robert Grimes and Michael Morrison at Victoria Park, has been frustrated by postponements and has only had six league games since November.

But the bad weather has at least given Fell time to build up a squad almost from scratch.

“The bad weather has been a blessing in some respects, because we had a chance then to get players in and begin working with them”, he said. “So it’s not been a bad thing from a football point of view, because in my first three games we virtually threw a team together as best we could and got found out a bit.

“We have had players come in since then like Chris Turner and Adnan Ahmed, and I think we have turned the corner.”

Fell has been working his players hard as he bids to improve their chances and he added: “When we haven’t played we’ve trained, we have a fantastic 3G facility at Accrington College that we use there, so we can play friendlies or practice games there if a game gets called off and there’s no reason for the lads not to be match fit.

“For the rest of the season we want to do as well as we possibly can. I think we are a much better side than the league table says we are at the moment.

“Our aim is really to be building for next year, but in the meantime there’s nothing to stop us – if we were to go on a little run now – quickly start moving up the league, because the league is very tight and there are teams who have played a lot more games than us.

“If we win three or four of the games we have in hand on teams above us who have played more games, we will be in a position to move much higher up the table than we are now.”
