West Ham cool interest in Blackburn Rovers star

First published in Sport Lancashire Telegraph: Photograph of the Author by , Blackburn Rovers reporter

WEST Ham United look to set to admit defeat in their pursuit of Martin Olsson with Blackburn Rovers continuing to price the Swedish international out of the market.

The Hammers had a bid in the region of £2million rejected for the left back earlier in the month and were told their valuation of the player was significantly lower than the club’s.

Reports yesterday claimed former Rovers boss Sam Allardyce was about to come in with an improved offer for the 24-year-old, although no further official contact has been made since the initial bid.

Now West Ham manager Allardyce has admitted their interest in Olsson is all but over for the moment, claiming Rovers are asking too much for him.

Allardyce said: “We’ve not made any further enquiries or any further bids for Martin Olsson.

“At this moment in time we haven’t got the funds to go back in with a higher bid.”

West Ham are not the only club interested in Olsson this month, with a number of clubs from across Europe monitoring his situation. No other official bids have been received though and, with Rovers believed to be asking for offers in excess of £6m before even considering selling, the club remain confident of keeping him.

Sources close to the player have told the Lancashire Telegraph he would be interested in the opportunity to speak to a suitor – should an offer be accepted – but is not about to try to force a move away from Ewood Park.

Olsson, who is under contract until 2015, is believed to be content with life in East Lancashire and ready to play a key role in the club's push for an instant Premier League return.

The player had initially feared Premier League relegation would harm his international aspirations but, with that having not come to fruition, Olsson is unlikely to make life difficult for the club if a move does not transpire this month.

Rovers have been boosted by the news January signing Josh King is expected to be available for Saturday’s visit of Charlton, despite missing Friday’s draw at Wolves with a hamstring injury.

King is understood to be back in training this week, with Friday’s withdrawal precautionary, and is likely to be available for new boss Michael Appleton.

Appleton took the chance to watch some of his squad in action in a behind closed doors friendly against Fleetwood at Brockhall yesterday.

The new manager gave run-outs to a number of senior players including Gael Givet, Mauro Formica, David Goodwillie and Nuno Gomes in the 2-1 victory.

Striker Anton Forrester also played in the fixture with Rovers set to seal a deal for the 18-year-old Everton youngster in the coming days.

Quite a sensible approach to this from Olsson and the Rovers. 6 Million plus for an International attacking pacey full back seems about the right price to ask. Maybe not the best defender in the world but he does have his good defensive moments and he is a threat going forward so we would certainly have to buy to replace him. It would seem silly to disrupt the team right now - so maybe he can go at the end of the season?

Why do Venkys need to waste money on hiring a PR firm when they have people like RoversSwiss and RoversPal1 to do their PR for FREE ??

i have often been in opposition to the actions of BRAG in the past, but on the whole i do think it's useful that the organisation exists. i think the challenge to brag now is to remain relevant in a climate where more people are wanting to move on under a fresh manager.

Good news from Mr Olsson not pushing to leave. Big Sam was trying the old Arsne wenger trick. Find a player worth 6 million and offer 2 hoping he will kick the door down. I see rovers are still signing players despite shaggy saying we wern't going to and all the doomongers and naysayers jumped on that bandwagon ready for a lynching,
Could do with a defender and a more mobile steady away midfielder as Murphy has one foot nailed in the centre circle.

Look out for more 'good news'. 'happy days' stories - there'll be plenty more coming along. Then again, what do I know. I'm just a doom- monger and nay-sayer.

Only like under Big Sam when we played Samba upfront for a few games haha, now that was an interesting time! Maybe Robinson is coming back as a replacement for Murphy? Be a good trade, Robinson never moved off his line either!!!

I think Defenders is really the only place we NEED signings. Not because Hanley or Dann are doing a bad job (which i don't think they are, much improved from last season), but simply to provide cover. When Best, Nunes (cracking RW material!) and Henley come back we should be in pretty good shape squad wise.

I doubt he's being signed with the expectation that he'll break into the first team straight away. It's more likely that he's been signed for the Academy with a view to develop him in readiness for the first team squad.

It is refreshing to note for the moment at least that we are fending off interest from potential buyers.

Credit to the owners and the management if they can maintain this position to the end of the window.

Why do Venkys need to waste money on hiring a PR firm when they have people like RoversSwiss and RoversPal1 to do their PR for FREE ??
I thought that that was a very reasonable post from RoverSwiss.

Boycotts and demonstrations have achieved nothing except to reduce attendances and generate exceptionally bad publicity for the fans.

I presume that you think that fans and fans' groups should not aim to support and build but rather destroy?

Fending off? You mean another club hasn't matched the Venky's asking price. How can you give the Venky's any credit after everything they have done to the club you claim to support.

They seek him here, they seek him there the LT don't seem to be able to interview him anywhere.
That is the black hole that is Ewood, it's the new Bermuda triangle -- nothing from Shabby, Agnew or Appleton, they're probably on a team building exercise.
No actually they are at the tailors being measured for sackcloth and ashes (definition:

They will then prostrate themselves in front of Madam D. Begging forgiveness for putting the club in such dire straits. Michael Appleton will be standing at the rear brandishing his whip, ready to whip them all into shape.

Plummeting attendances have nothing to do with the Venky's sacking an experience Premiership manager, appointing K#$n, removing Williams and Finn, selling our best players, refusing to play some players to force them out refusing to spend this time last year to keep us up, and of course not to mention relegation. It's not the fans who have destroyed Jack Walker's legacy it's our wonderful owners, yes the same one you want to give 'credit' to.

It is very cynical but there is another 2 weeks to go and we know how this transfer lark is all a game so I wouldnt count out Olsson going at the last minute when Venkys realise they will miss out on some money for him. I see Mr Kean has now admitted his claim about Sam's sacking was untrue and withdrawn it and subsequently paid damages. Sam's made a packet from the club and now Kean for this but Kean had it coming. He is a jumped up liar and was showing off to fans shooting his mouth off to impress them and make his own position in the club look more important. Does anybody know a reason why Venkys stuck with him given his obvious lack of honesty? And all those other fans and media who claimed he was dignified and doing a good job. There's either a significant lack of football awareness in this country or a lot of liars.

Theres no need for the nasty.

Maybe you need to take off your tinted glasses too and see the truth for what it is.

Venky's own Rovers. They bought it lock stock and turnstile thanks to our not so caring previous owners. (yes, apparently they own the grounds and Brockhall too, contrary to previous suggestions that they were rented).

They can and will do whatever they want with it if you don't like it, you need to move on with your life and accept the truth.

As an analogy, If your family owned a classic car and it was sold to someone whose idea of classic was to rip out the best bits, sell them off and replace them with cheap unbranded knockoffs, you wouldn't have any rights to expect them to maintain it to the level you have come to expect it to be treated - regardless of what they promised you when you sold it to them. It was sold. They bought it. It doesn't make it right and you have every right to feel upset, let down, decieved etc. You can't change the fact that it doesn't belong to you. Not a perfect analogy I accept, since the buyer wouldn't be hoping you'd still keep paying to ride in it and enjoy it, but it makes the point.

It doesn't make it right, but then those who deal in right and wrong rarely make millions.

The idea of it somehow belonging to the fans and what Venky's are doing to it are sadly foolish sentimental notions that were left behind a long time ago when big money came into Football and it became a ludicrous business.

Reality is, if you no longer feel Ewood is the place you could call your own, you either move on or add further to its destruction, thus ruining it for those who are trying to above the political circus and concentrate on supporting the team.

If you want to vent bitterness at anyone, you should aim it at the Walkers Trust, who will be even right now without remorse and blissfully unaware of the damage their greed has caused, enjoying the millions they made from Jack's legacy.

Maybe the protesters should take their protest outside Walkers and demand they take action to mediate between the protesters and Venky's as to why the promises they made haven't been kept.

If anyone owes us anything, it surely starts with them.

There have always been a small minority of fans who craved for the old days of small attendances, local derbies against the likes of Preston, Bury and Oldham, and getting home for 5pm for their tea. Seems like a few on them are on here today, no wonder they want to give the Venky's credit for fullfilling their dreams. But I'm just being blinkered, it's obviously the Walker Trust who we should be blaming, so lets give the Venky's the credit they deserve for, er, ... sorry I can't think of anything.

But I'm just being blinkered, it's obviously the Walker Trust who we should be blaming, so lets give the Venky's the credit they deserve for, er, ... sorry I can't think of anything. riversidefan

Darener, not all cars. And we are far far from the magnet we aren't even analagically on Gumtree being offered to anyone stupid enough to believe its still worth something. We're closer to those who know cars knowing if it keeps getting mistreated, the only place it can go is the knackers yard. Or in our case administration.

Riversidefan, Venky's deserve credit only for not getting sick of the negative results they themselves created and walking away. Not exactly a pat yourself on the back moment to be proud of, but they also haven't done many of the lies that have been fabricated to add fuel to the fire, above and beyond what is already known about the clueless decisions that were made and trusting agents who pocketed huge sums of royalties - which is common practice and should have never been allowed.

Venky's look like very strange asset strippers, if the lies are to be believed. Clueless incompetence can be rectified. Evil intentions cannot. I think you're misinterpreting lusorovers comment when you say we want to return to the old days of small club and fanbase.

Like myself and many others, we are just making the point that antagonising Venky's into leaving and subsequent administration is not in the best interest of the club surely?

Blueblooded...you seem to be contradicting yourself. At the start you say I am wrong that we are under the magnet but then you finish by saying we are on our way to the knackers yard! You are an optomist I am a pessimist that is the only difference between us!
