PENDLE Phoenix bounced back from last weekend’s heavy defeat to high-flying Ashton-Under-Lyne – but they had to survive a late rally from their hosts.
Phoenix travelled to Manchester looking to recover from that 32-5 loss.With a number of key personnel back, Phoenix were hoping this would be a turning point in 2013 and they got off to a flying start.
Andy Dutton, Rob Lawless and Jan Askew were soon creating holes in the home defence allowing space for James Finucane to score the first try in the opening minutes of the game. James Redford added the extras to make it 7-0.
Redford slotted over a penalty soon after to make it 10-0 before Old Bedians replied with one of their own to make it 10-3.
But straight from the kick off, Phoenix passed the ball through hands resulting with Redford scoring in the corner.
Redford crossed for a second try before departing injured as Pendle led 20-3.
Sonny Waddington seemed to have put the game save with a try, converted by Rob Lawless but they had to hang on as Old Bedians got to within six points.
