Appleton appointed as Blackburn Rovers boss

Michael Appleton Michael Appleton

BLACKBURN Rovers have confirmed that Michael Appleton has been appointed as the club's new manager.

Appleton spent today in talks at Ewood Park and leaves his job as Blackpool boss to take over at Rovers, with assistant Ashley Westwood also making the move.

The duo have put pen to paper on two-and-a-half-year deals as Appleton succeeds Henning Berg as boss, although caretaker manager Gary Bowyer will take charge for the final time at Wolves tonight.

Rovers were granted permission to speak to Appleton and Westwood on Thursday night and the duo arrived at Ewood this morning, accompanied by their lawyer, before finalising personal terms.

Appleton said: “I am delighted to be joining such an historic club.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for me and I am excited about the challenge we have ahead of us.

"I can’t wait to start working with what is a very talented group of players.

“I’d like to thank everyone at Blackpool for their efforts during my time there and the chairman for allowing me to come here.

"I wish them all the best for the future.”

Rovers’ managing director Derek Shaw said: “We are delighted to welcome both Michael and Ashley to the football club.

"They are both highly regarded within the game and we are confident that they have the drive and ambition to take this club forward.

"We will do everything in our powers to support them in our quest to make an instant return to the Premier League.”

I'm afraid it is not the players choice. Just like any place of work, the players are the shop floor staff but on tens of thousands of pounds a week.

Do you expect them to name players when quoting? They are only given information on condition they don't disclose sources. Doesn't make it untrue. I imagine some players are unsettled by the constant carousel of managers and each one that hops on isn't any more impressive than the last. Some of those players have worked for top managers. I just don't understand the logic behind any of what happens and suspect logic doesn't come into it. Shaw and Agnew must have made some recommendations when they went to India. How would Venkys opt for Appleton when looking at whats available? Good look Gary and the lads for tonight though. 3 pts is more important than anything.

Like a lot of folk on here I`m not happy as I pointed out in a post yesterday that his record is 1 point a game (Pompei + Blackpool or just Blackpool`s results) However now the decision has been taken it`s up to the fans to get behind the team and manager otherwise it will surely have a detrimental impact on results! How many times have we heard that the fans can be the 12th man? Well now it`s time to show that for BRFC as even though I hate the Venky`s & the current management (especially that idiot Shebby "Numpty" Singh) what we must remember is "Blackburn Rovers FC" are more important, and when history is written - good or bad - this lot will be just a passing moment in the proud history of our club. So put your prejudices behind you and for the sake of "The Club" get behind the team & manager otherwise you can`t truely call yourself a supporter as you`re either with BRFC or against them! Your club needs you now more than ever so forget about the idiots in Pune & in the board room at Ewood and get behind the team because when it comes down to it that`s all that really matters!

Bumped into Shabby Singh this afternoon near Brockhall - definitely no one working together at Ewood - when I told him I was ashamed at what they had all done to a once proud club he openly admitted the whole situation was a mess - couldn't believe my ears!!!!!!! He then mumbled on that he didn't see why he should put himself through all this grief - I reminded him that maybe it was the 'big fat retainers' that spur him and his cohorts on - didn't give him any further chance to speak - I said that I had no belief in any of them regarding the future of the Club - they have brought this once proud club to its knees and it looks like this latest appointment has been made without the full support of all the Board Members - yes what a mess!!!!

We're not far from a play off spot, currently on a winning streak and have plenty of games to make good. Let's just get behind Appleton and be the 12th man and ignore the circus behind us. A two and a half year contract means like Kean, we are stuck with him for better or worse and one only has one option if as a supporter we want to get our team back to the top ranks whence we came from and that is get behind the new manager and team.

I couldn't go today for health reasons, but I'll be cheering the team on at the next game come what may in the farcical tenure of Venky's, hoping we've turned a corner and can get back to the important task of supporting the team on the ground.

I wouldn't be surprised if Venkys thought Michael Appleton is the man that got Blackpool promoted to the premier league just as they didn't know you could be relegated from premier league. Rovers have had 5 men in charge this season and Appleton will take charge of his 3rd club this season. I hope there is soon some consistency and things settle because we have basically lost half a season's start on this push.

I really don't understand all your negativity, do you lot actually know anything about football or bother to do any homework on the subject before coming on here and spouting bile. As a Burnley fan I was delighted when you persevered with Steve Keane for so long, and I was quietly optimistic that Berg's tenure would turn out the way it did, however I think you've got one of the best, and most coveted, coaches around in Appleton, he was my choice for the Burnley job, and was interviewed, but we went for Dyche instead. Appleton is held in high regard for his coaching ability by many respected football people, including Roy Hodgson, the trouble is you morons will base your opinion on his win ratio you bothered to look up on Wikipedia without looking into the constraints he was under at Portsmouth.
If he does fail (which as a Claret I hope he does) it will be a combination of your ridiculous owners undermining him and not giving him long enough to turn it around, combined with the moronic faithful (you lot) having a go at him from day one and not giving him a chance.

Keep up the good work ....idiots!

I was listening to the Villa manager earlier, full of praise for the Villa fans, this despite Villa's woeful performances last and this season so far.

(Am I alone in thinking Villa were actually a worse team than Rovers last season?).

Anyway, their fans are behind their team, their players, their club despite their dire position.

Real supporters, Villa fans.

OK things under Venky's are dire, but real Rovers fans will have their say and then get down to Ewood and get behind their team, manager (whoever it is this week) and staff.

Forget the clowns in charge, forget the idiots at BRAG, BRSIT and the rest, who appear to be either totally incompetent or just about capable of raising enough money to buy a dog kennel from Pets at Home.

Rovers like any other team are absolutely nothing without their fans, and in my honest opinion, if you are no longer prepared to get down to Ewood and support them through thick and thin then you no longer have the right to criticise the manager staff and players.

You lost that right when you turned your back on them.

When are they going to change the name of Blackburn Rovers to 'Old Prestonians'. Talk about jobs for the boys. Gary will need a great deal of help to get that enormous knife out of his back!!

What knife?

Garry Bowyer stated quite clearly several times that he didn't want the job full time, he isn't stupid, just like Tony Parkes wasn't stupid.

With the idiots in charge, the constant fighting behind the scenes and some of the fans constantly looking of someone, anyone local to blame for everything and anything who can blame him?

We don't know about Appleton yet do we? It's pretty obvious he's Shaw's man which is hopefully the beginning of the end for Shebby, especially if Appleton hits the ground running and we continue to pick up points.

And if Shebby goes the infighting should be over, then perhaps we will start to get some stability back in the club.

The only "experienced" name I have seen quoted is Phil Brown: if he had been appointed would the vultures have been happy??

A lot supporters seem to be willing to support the Venkeys no matter how many lies ,dirty tricks or whatever they do ,they just keep handing these chicken farmers their money.
It was well understandable that the players and managers head was not on the game last night ,they must be sick too of all the outright lies being told to them.
It seems the only qualification you need is a bald head ,a bad win record and not be loyal to the club.
The word from Blackpool supporters was that he was totaly unsuitable ,Oyston was very happy to lose the guy and get the next managers first year wage paid for by Rovers, if he was so good why could he not equal Holloway's record.
At Portsmouth all he did was pick the same players as he had a very small squad these players were playing out of their skin.
The guy has no loyalty to any club any offer to him and he will be off.
Why has he got a 2 1/2 year deal ,as was stated ,no promotion and he is out.
The only way to let this shower know how the supporters feel is by staying away and not let this shower walk over the supporters.
Those who keep going help to keep Rovers the laughing stock of football.

Im just a bit scared that if Appleton does well, a footballing giant like..... 'Bournemouth" may come along to lure him away.

Imagine a manager jumping ship to go off to Bournmouth...patheti

BRKFC - THE INTERNATIONAL LAUGHING STOCK NEAR SHADSWORTH
just who are the laughing stock
the fans didn't appoint any of the managers caretaker or otherwise
venky,s and venks agents did that
steve kean who burnley fans seem to hold in such high regard had the worst
record in the history of a club that have been around one hundred sixty three years hence the protest
as for Appleton could turn out to be
the next mark hughes or the next
steve kean time will tell
